Qn: Is there any other device that allows me to connect to ipad?

Dear experts,

May i know how could I connect my Ipad with USB or external drive without using the Apple Camera Connector? Could I used the same device such as a USB Hub?

I'm not sure what you are trying to say.

However, the iPad does not have a USB port whatsoever. It only has the 30-pin dock connector, so you must get the Apple Camera Connection kit.

Hi Melman,

I have a USB cable that allows it to Sync to Mac. Thus i was thinking of using the same cable and connect to a USB hub and also slot my thumb drive together into that device. Would it allows my Ipad to connect to the thumbdrive in this manner upon using iFile?

I don't know for certain but my suspicion is no. USB systems consist of one host and multiple endpoints. When you use the dock cable your computer is the host and the iPad is the endpoint. In comparison when you use the CCK the iPad acts as the USB host and your camera/card reader acts as the endpoint. There must be something about the CCK that tells the iPad to act as a host; maybe it connects to entirely separate parts of the dock connector. You could probably rig up something to do this yourself but it would be a lot easier to just buy the CCK.

I tried using the USB port. As mentioned by you guys it doesn't work. Thanks, i maybe the solution would be purchasing a camera connector kit and sync with iFile.

That used to work with 3.2.x, but it won't work if you are on 4.2.2.

Oh so does that mean i cannot use ifile now? I am currently running on 4.2.1 mode and i used red Sn0w to jailbreak the program. Pls advice.

I have done some research online and some of the comments were that ifile wouldn't work for ipad 4.2.1 unless you purchase it. It kind of sad for me as i would like to develop web application on it and would like to use ifile for access the files from my thumbdrive. Could there be any other way i could access all files on my thumbdrive other than using ifile app.

You cannot. Its a proprietary connection. True one end of the cable is usb, but the working but, the one that goes into the iPad is proprietary.

You cannot use anything but apple authorized parts, so to make a long story short. You cannot connect a usb or external drive using the camera connector.

A proprietary connection, yes, but all that means is you have to use an adapter. In this case, the camera connection kit.

there is no need to use "apple authorized parts". Their own cables are not special, just more expensive.

As far as I know, buying iFile would make no difference, it's just that 4.2.x doesn't let you use thumbdrives with the camera connection kit anymore, just tells you the thumbdrive is imcompatible because it draws too much power. I doubt the paid version of iFile gets around this restriction, but then, I haven't checked recently, so maybe it does?

It would be good to know what exactly you are trying to do. There are numerous ways of getting files onto an iPad that don't involve a USB connection at all. As a few examples you could email a zip of the files to yourself, get a Dropbox account and put the files there or buy Goodreader and transfer your files into it.

The new power limit on USB devices is pretty annoying. I hadn't tried using my card reader recently and now I do I find it's bringing up the power error. Still at least my camera still works when directly connected, which is fortunate as it uses xD cards not SD cards.

BlackNBUK, basically based on what you have mentioned, would it be better to use an external harddrive instead?

In order to connect an external hard drive and see it with iFile, the hard drive would need to be hooked up to its own power source, at which point the whole setup is no longer portable. It's just so much simpler to use a computer+iTunes.

If the hard drive had it's own power source that might solve the problem that 4.3 introduced; however you would still need to buy a Camera Connection Kit and probably iFile. What I don't understand is, why are you so determined to use USB to get files onto your iPad? There are loads of other ways you could be doing this that are easy and don't require a jailbreak.

Thanks everyone for your help.

Now i know that ifile app happened to work on USB anymore due to the power restriction on the new ver. blackNBUK has given valuable advice to a noob like me. The reason being of focusing on USB is due to easy file transfer and access, since my iPad is a non 3G ver which therefore kind of hard to access online files.

I apologise for any stupid qn that i ask.
