Getting iPad 3G - How to obtain a SIM card?

Dear all,

I just preoredered an iPad 3G in an Apple Store in NY (U.S.A., of course...), and look forward for it. So, in the meantime I am wondering how to setup the 3G connection. On the web site, Apple makes a lot of buzz around how simple it is to setup the 3G data plan with AT&T from within the iPad - "without even ever going to the store" or sth. similar. However, I wonder: the iPad still needs a SIM card to work (in fact, a micro-SIM) - how do I get that without going to an AT&T store (or ordering it online or via phone)? Since I have never had any contract or whatever agreement or account with AT&T (I am quite new in the U.S., just here for six months), I wonder what the requirements might be. Is the 3G-iPad shipped with a blank AT&T SIM-card installed? Will my debit card really be enough - or should I take care of that before hands, in order not to be disappointed later, when my iPad comes on a happy weekend?

:-D

Thank You if You can clarify any of my questions!
With kind regards,
Björn

In the U.S., the 3G iPads ship with the microsim. I think a debit card will be fine as ling as it's tied to a U.S. address.

Hi!

Ah, thanks. Good to know! Yes, my debit card, of course, is tied to my physical adress... I think it should be fine then... we'll see.

But, in fact, I think that Apple could mention that they ship their iPads with micro-SIMs installed... after all, that was a very puzzling question to solved. Anyway, I know - Apple doesn't read the forum posts :-D

Thanks again, Meg!

They don't ship all their iPads with a microSim installed. In the UK, where there are multiple providers, you either indicate which provider you are going to use or you get one from the provider.

If you use a debit card it has to be one without a PIN.
