Single 'bad' file crashes entire sync?

I've just been syncing my first batch of music tracks. Initial attempts using all the 100 or so tracks crashed iTunes. I then did it methodically by album. I eventually found that just 5 tracks across 2 albums by one particular artist (Acoustic Alchemy) were the cause. 50 or so tracks across several other albums by that same artist synced OK.

OK, I can investigate those 5, no big deal.

But is this standard iTunes behaviour? I would have expected a 'bad' file to be by-passed, not crash the whole process.

I have not experienced a similar problem with my iPad but I have not had any corrupted files. However, I have had corrupted files associated with my iPod and the sync process simple stopped at that point with an error message. It seems that is how iTunes handles such files.
