What are the settings for using an ATT mail account with iPad mail?

Dear Folks,

I just switched from earthlink to att, and I can't seem to get Mail configured quite right. I can send email just fine, via stmp.att.yahoo.com. But when I try to receive email it tells me it can't connect to pop.att.yahoo.com.

Since I can send OK, I figure my email address and password have to be good, so most likely I'm using the wrong POP server address.

Would someone like to give me a clue?

Thanks!

Dear hm,

Heheh-- I can go out but not in, you're the other way around. Kinda surprised we didn't get an instant answer to these questions-- maybe we're the only two people on the planet using att mail.

That said, excruciating trial and error got me to a solution for the iPad-- may or may not work for you, but here goes:

Incoming Mail server: pop.att.yahoo.com
Outgoing Mail Server: smtp.att.yahoo.com
Server Port: 995 (note: this is NOT the default on the iPad)
Use SSL: On
Authentication: Password (note: this is NOT the default on the iPad)
User name: xxxx@att.net
Password: your passwordhere

Also found this URL with additional info about many services:

Good luck! Let me know if this works for you.

Hi Pax,

Funny, I was starting to also think we were the only ones on the planet that were having this problem, or that apple support was the worst on the planet. Since this is my fist time posting a questions – I only have this post to base my option on.

I went in and changed my Server Port from the default to “995” – and it didn’t work. But… What is funny is that when I went back in and changed it back to the default – get this… It worked. So, thanks for sharing what worked for you so that I would go in and play with the settings again getting mine to also work.

Dear Jennifer,

It's just Ctein-- "pax" is merely a signoff, like "sincerely."

Since you're new to the discussion groups, you may not realize that this is NOT official Apple support. This is just a motley of end-users who try to answer each others' questions. Usually the quality of response is decent, but I've noticed that good answers to iPad questions (that aren't utterly trivial) seem to be much harder to come by. I think it's too new a platform for there to be many 'experts' out there.

For what little it's worth, I noticed the same phenomenon, working on getting both my ipad Mail and friend's MacBook Pro Mail to work properly (with different carriers). We both had settings for some functions that should have been by the book and worked, but they didn't. So we tried alternate settings and sometimes they worked, but when they didn't switching back to the original (non-working) setting made things work. Weird, but you're not alone in seeing this.

My arm-waving guess is that there's something in the Mail preferences that's a bit 'sticky.' Ah well, at least all of us got our problems solved.

Am having similar problems. Outgoing settings work on our iBook, using home wireless net, but the same settings do not work on our iPad. Why is this, and can anything be done to fix this?

I am connected to our AT&T DSL modem via Ethernet cable. the modem is the wireless type, also.

INCOMING: pop.att.yahoo.com
USERNAME: [name]@sbcglobal.net
PASSWORD: *************
PORT: 995 w/Use SSL checked.

OUTGOING: smtp.att.yahoo.com
USERNAME: [name]@sbcglobal.net
PASSWORD: *************
PORT: 465 w/Use SSL checked

I entered this info into the iPad before syncing it and have tried many permutations to no avail. Talking to AT&T did no good as they suggested coming out and changing settings in the DSL modem, which would have precluded using it normally, and would have made it impossible to connect elsewhere with the iPad. D'oh!

Apple doesn't have an answer as we spent a couple of hours with one of their "GENIUSES" and after asking his supervisor about it we left with only the mobileme capability. We can access the internet tho, just not use our own email address.

All I can say is HELP--HELP--HELP--HELP--HELP--HELP--HELP--HELP--HELP--HELP-!!

P.S. A family member who just left Apple told me that the next OS is going to be called "LION, OS7!"
