When I contacted apple support. I was told this is because these sites are using invalid coding. The sites need to be updated in order for them to work with the Ipad.

I am having difficulty getting into my university's web portal. When I successfully get to the university's website and then click on the portal link, I get a message back from the iPad saying "Safari cannot open the page because it could not establish a secure connection to the website." I have no difficulty getting into the portal using my MacBook in exactly the same location. What's going on and how to make it work?

Same exact thing is happening to me. many many websites including Schools, medical centers, bill pay sites do not let me log in from the Ipad.

So, I have to ask the University to upgrade their site? That doesn't sound likely. I wonder if anyone has asked for an Apple work-around (or a non-apple workaround...).
There is no workaround at this time. Apple did ask me to email the URL's of the sites that do not work.
It looks to me that most of them have some sort of JAVA or cookie script involved.
Just like in another post that some people in Hotels are having problems trying to use the Ipad when you have to log in though some sort of portal first.
IMOP. I think it's a problem with safari on the ipad.

I don't have my iPad yet so this may be off but try Opera Mini (free). I understand sometimes it does things like this that safari doesn't.
