how do you control volume w/o volume bar?

An Apple store worker told me how to do this but I forget:

With iOS 5 for iPad you are able bring up a box on the screen that allow control of the volume without using the volume bar. I have trouble with my volume bar (it gets stuck) which is why I am asking about this feature.

Thanks,

You can double tap the home button to bring up the recents tray - swipe to the right in the tray - and there is a volume control on the right side.

I'm unaware of anything specific to iOS 5, but then again I don't run that OS. A quick websearch yielded nothing on it, however.

One way that's available to all iPads and most, if not all, installed versions of iOS is as follows:

a. Double tap the Home button to bring up the Recents Tray along the bottom

b. Swipe to the extreme left hand display

c. Adjust the volume

d. Tap outside of the tray to close it
