I haven't heard or read anything about whether the iPad will have the Voice Control feature that the iPhone 3GS currently has. Anyone know?

An actual, original iPad thread. Well done, sir. :D

You'd think it would but since it was never mentioned anywhere, I guess not.

iPad has a built-in microphone and can easily use the microphone on earphones too

apple's newest iPhone OS devices (3GS and iPod touch 3.0) can do voice control so iPad probably can too

:)

No mention of it in the specs. It'll read on-screen text back to you though. Give developers a little time and someone will make an app for it given that the needed hardware is in place.

They haven't mentioned Voice Control, therefore it's not included.

That's a bad argument, just because they haven't mentioned it doesn't neccessarily mean its not included. It could be that they just didn't feel like it was a feature they wanted to emphasize. Also, Apple sometimes adds things at the last minute that were not announced intially.

Does the iPad have a microphone? I don't recall seeing that in the Apple specs. Why? A mic is essential on the iPhone (two way communication) but why would you need one on a content delivery device (one way info flow)? Other than voice commands, I can't imagine why this 1st gen device needs a mic. And even then, if I'm using it while watching TV or with a bunch of people yacking around me, it would only get confused. I don't see much value beyond amazing your friends. It would be funny watching someone scream at their iPad on a train though.

You may have to click a Tech Specs tab, they seem to be moving things around a lot (or my memory is bad).

(To answer your 'why' question, I'm sure a lot of people will want things like Skype.)

Maybe its a release day surprise feature

Its customary in sales to give a few extras when the customer makes a purchase

Makes the customer feel they received more than what they paid for

It is? Since when has Apple ever done this?

In my experience, if it's not explicitly mentioned on Apple's website, don't expect a certain feature to be present. Not saying it wont have it, but to expect it to would be foolish.

Yes, but it'll only respond to Steve J's voice. And the only command that can be given is "All your pad belong to us"... :D

Actually no it's not, Apple are trying to sell a product - they will advertise every feature they can to get people to buy it. The iPad will likely not have Voice Control, nothing can be certain but it makes sense.

Seems like a cool feature. I've played with it on my Win7 tablet and unless you're armless it's not much more than a cool trick. I suppose if I had a tablet mounted in my car and was stuck there most of a day it would be nice to voice command it. May be the O.P. could state why he's interested. Anyone else have a good need for voice command?

Honestly, I see no reason why it wouldn't. I think "Will it lack voice control" might be a better question for the -Why would they take it out when it's already there- sense.

I don't know. You would think Apple would talk about it on the iPad iPod feature page.

"When you want to play a song, tap it. The Now Playing screen appears, displaying the album art for the song you’re playing. Tap to flip the album over and view the track list. Use your finger to pause, shuffle, change the track, and adjust the volume. Or, if you prefer some private listening, connect wired or Bluetooth wireless headphones, and it’s just you, your favorite tunes, and fantastic sound."

Why wouldn't they say, you can also start music with Voice Control?

I'm beginning to think it won't be in the iPad.

But if the iPad doesn't have Voice Control, the question becomes why? As another poster pointed out, they already have it on the 3rd gen iPod touch, so why take it out?

Maybe because "It just didn't look good full screen" like the weather and stock apps they left out...

Maybe they are re-vamping it for 4.0 because it doesn't do much at all right now. And if they had it for the iPad it wouldn't have many commands at all. Maybe Steve didn't feel it was necessary.

I don't know, but it just seems weird that they would promote voice control so highly on the 3GS and not even one feature on the iPad for it. All they would have to do is copy the content from the iPhone page to the iPad page. Just doesn't seem like Apple to leave it out.

Heh. I'm still waiting to hear what happened to the clock app, I use that a lot! But still, why should it matter what it looks like, isn't the point of Voice Control you don't have to look at it????

I don't see why they wouldn't tell people if it was voice controlled. that's a pretty good feature that people would love. I would market it like crazy!

I think because this is a 10 inch tablet we are talking about. They are going in to detail about how to interact with it by touch because - as stated, its a tablet. They are not going to say "Why bother when you can use voice control!". This is just my theory. I just really don't understand why they would make the effort to remove it.

Haha, yeah. I was mocking them. I thought that was ridiculous. Oh well. Surely they are not just totally dropping them and hopefully will be in a future update.
