CF Card reader with iPad

Other topics suggested using a CF card reader to transfer photos from a Compact Flash Card to the iPad. I have a Dynex card reader model # DX-CR121......it will not work with the iPad as the iPad says the device requires too much power. Looks like I have to use an external card reader that does not require any power from the device it is attached to. Can anyone tell me what CF card reader will work?

When did it become popular to call connecting a cable from one device to another "tethering".

Tethering:
http://mobileoffice.about.com/od/phonesformobileworkers/f/what-is-tethering.htm

"Tethering" is the use of your cell phone -- or other Internet-enabled mobile device -- as a modem for another device, usually a notebook or PDA. The connection is made either with a cable (USB or serial) or wirelessly through bluetooth (or, in the good old days, via infrared or IrDA).

Hi !

I have just discovered that this problem is new. I have been reading my cf cards with my card reader connected to the IPad USB camera kit connector for many months.

However since my IPad SW upgrade to v4.2 it now complains about too much power required by the device... This was not the case before.

Perhaps APPLE can comment on this change ?

Best regards

As Apple don't monitor these user-to-user forums they won't comment here - you will need to provide feedback here http://www.apple.com/feedback/ipad.html.

As part of the 4.2 update the power that is supplied to the CCK has been reduced, probably partly to limit the battery drain from external devices that were being conected to it. As a slight aside, as far as I aware, the CCK was only ever described by Apple as being for connecting directly to a camera or iPhone, or as an SD reader - the description with mine doesn't say that it can be used with other card readers or devices

The answer to "when did it become popular" is a number of years before the use with which you are familiar.

Take a quick look in the Aperture Forum and search "tethering." You may be surprised. 🙂

You need to add a powered USB hub between the reader and the ipad. For portability I suggest a battery powered hub, CP-H420MP. To the best of my knowledge it is the only one in existance and out of production. As of now the only internet reseller still having some in stock is www.sourceresearch.com. I just got one and it seems to work fine.
