I opened an Excel spreadsheet as an email attachment and it opened full screen with no buttons to go back. I was unable to go back to the mail app and when I click the home button and then the mail app it took me back to the spreadsheet. I had to reboot.
Is there some way to handle this next time it happens?

When you open something like a spreadhseet, all you have to do is tap it and you'll see a done button in the upper left hand corner, which will close the attachment. You could have also touched your home button once and you'd have been taken to your home page.

I thought I tried touching the spreadsheet, I did press the home button, though when I went back to the mail app it was still in the spreadsheet so I couldn't get back to my emails.
Was unable to go back a screen so I had to reboot...
