IPAD wont restore "This device isn't eligible for the requested build" With ITunes 10.6.3

I am helping my aunt restore her Ipad to default settings after she accidentally changed the password. I turned off the IPad, held the home button, and plugged it into her computer. A box came up with Itunes detects a device in recovery mode but you must restore the I Pad before it can be used. I clicked ok then Restore. A new box came up saying are you sure, everything will be erased and updated. I clicked Restore and Update. The computer says extracting software... but when it is about __ percent done it says "The iPad "iPad" could not be restored. This device isn't eligible for the requested build" I checked out the most common reasons for this error and her I tunes is running a10.6.3. I tried the other trouble shooting methods but she does not know her password for her computer and I dont know enough about apple computers to mess with the firewall. Could someone tell me how I might fix this issue?

What is the model she has? She isn't running the current version of Snow Leopard or iTunes. She should upgrade Snow Leopard: download and install the Mac OS X 10.6.8 Update Combo v1.1 to update Snow Leopard to 10.6.8. Next, she needs to upgrade iTunes which she can do via Software Updater.

See the chart below to determine whether you can upgrade your device and what you can upgrade to. If you do not have a Software Update option present on your iDevice, then you are trying to upgrade to iOS 5 or higher. You will have to connect your device to your computer and open iTunes in order to upgrade.

She remembered her password for her computer and I went into the host only to find it was empty...Any clue what that is about and should I be concerned?

I imputed the following into the terminal

sudo nano /private/etc/hosts

and the terminal that came up looks exactly like the one in the troubleshooting page but devoid of any entrys.
