As often as not people are going to be searching for proper names of people, streets, businesses, etc.
On the iPad we are more likely to be using a keyboard -- typing the term quickly and hitting 'return.'
I am continually finding myself at a useless results page because the spell check 'corrected' my 'mistake' for me in the split-second between finishing typing and pressing return.
I understand the usefulness of this feature globally.
There should be a way to disable it just in search fields, where it more often slows us down than helps us.
I wanted to learn more about Hamid Shirvani, the dean at CSU Stanislaus involved in a flap about Sarah Palin. I ended up at a results page for Hammed Shirvani.
I read about a web service called Nozbe and ended up at the results page for Nozzle
I wanted to find out the differences between Feeddler Pro and free, so Googled the developer's name Liu and ended up at Feedler Lou
Trying to find website "movieline" got me to "movie line"
Attempting to learn more about Holocaust denier jürgen graf got me to jargon graf
website ign turned into gin. Which I at that point I probably needed more, but still.
These seem like fairly routine sorts of searches.
And yes, you can override them -- if you remember to pause AFTER you've typed the word but BEFORE you press return, which is to say it's possible simply by un-learning a lifetime habit to account for a software deficiency. My first choice would be to correct the "correcting" software.
It's the same on the iphone and yet 1. we do less surfing on the iphone, and 2. the whole experience changes once a speedy keyboard is involved.
I totally agree!!! Lately things have been getting way overcomplicated. I do the same thing when searching for anything, especially on Facebook, where it will continually auto-correct proper names, and unless you dismiss the correction, it will provide you with useless search results. I don't think auto-correct is very useful in search bars at all, since the search engine itself will often provide the nearest match much more effectively.

I'm not sure I follow either...I have not seen this happen to me while searching on iPad though...can you ignore the suggestion like on iPhone?
No, I am saying that the feature, while generally useful, is uniquely not useful in search fields, given how often we search for names and proper nouns. So there should be a setting allowing users to keep the correction feature on for everything except search fields.
The auto-correct feature is a real nuisance when it is applied inappropriately, such as in fields that require one to input ones name or email address. It really is a priority to make this feature more selective in its operation or to provide the option of turning it off alltogether.
