Safari on an iPad shows jpeg's as "?"

A mobile website was created which contains several image galleries. All images are saved as jpeg's, and all are identically sized (Height & Width) to fill the iPad's screen. All of the jpeg files show up when the site is accessed from an iPhone or a desktop PC using Safari. However, many of the jpeg's show up as "?" when the site is accessed from my iPad.
