How can I back up iPad

If I have documents etc that I produce on it how can I back it up? I use time machine on my air I would be reluctant to produce things on it if I can't back up

Not sure if serious. Plug into PC or use iCloud backup.

Obviously the easiest method. Dropbox and box.net are also some alternatives that are free.
