Wifi connecting but not gettind DHCP address with Security turned on

Okay I have wired one.

Wifi works fine if there is no security turned on.
it gets a DHCP address and I can happily surf the web.
Turn on Security, the iPad talks to the Router and the Router show that it's MAC address is connected, but I can't get a DHCP address and if I do a Static it still doesn't connect.

Now I am using an older Router a Linksys BEFW11S4 which only supports B but it works fine with my iBook G4 with Airport Extreme card.

I have tried the Reset (Holding the Home and Power buttons for ten seconds until the Apple Icon shows up) and I still get a 169.254.x.x APIPA address.

Do I need to Turn off the Wireless part of this router and get a new wireless router?

Are only 802.11g/n supported with the iPad? the iPad and Router works together without security so that can't be right.

Is WEP not supported? No because, both the Router and the iPad are telling me that the iPad is connected to the Router, I just can't get a DHCP address or use a Static one. It is like someone forgot something in the code, if you are using WEP.

Any Clues as to what is happening would be nice.

Actually I can generate both a 64 or 128 bit key on the Linksys

My iBook G4 connects Flawlessly with 128bit WEP using the same password I am giving the iPad.

Again the iPad Connects, passed the Password Challenge, and both the Router and the iPad state it is connected, but will not obtain a DHCP address and the Data does not flow.

Okay on the off chance that things were stupid, and this was pretty weird and headed in that direction, I typed in the Hex code for the Pass Key, into the iPad. Started it with a "$" and then the long hex string.

Oh yeah that was it I am not working... just fine.

So something is a miss somewhere.

But Hey I am Working so I am Happy.

the hex key is shown in your Router, when you sent the PassKey, if you don't administrate your Router, then you may have to get with the Administrator to get the Hex Key, it will be a long Hexadecimal string "3a7cb8a1" something like that. and to use it you will need to put a $ at the beginning.

Apple WEP implementation is different on the touch, iPhone, and iPad. With the following restrictions in mind, you can create and use a password: 48 bit (5 characters); 128 bit (13 characters). You can always use the hex key from the key1 field in the router software or the one on the builders plate.

This is due purely to the way Apple chose to parse the alpha numeric passwords.

Your best bet, from a number of security standpoints and ease of implementation, is to use WPA2-psk for encryption.
