Mail Accounts

Hi,
I use Outlook on my PC.
It polls 4 different email accounts to receive/send...works fine.

I was able to establish setup of my AOL email...works fine.
When I try to add another account, I enter Never-Never world.
Where is an explanation of what is to be entered in the different fields
Name...myName?
Address...me@myweb.com?
Description...my #2 mail account?
Incoming Mail Server
Host Name....mail. myweb.com?...me@myweb.com?...myweb.com?....????
User Name....me?....me@myweb.com?
Password.....ppart##x ?
Outgoing Mail Server...smto.myweb.com ??

There is also a bunch of stuff on "Advanced"

If iPad doesn't automatically find/setup an account, how is one to proceed.
The user manual doesn't help.

Will you?

Thanks

Vaio, Windows XP

Name...myName?

Yes - your name.

Address... me@myweb.com ?

The email address for the account.

Description...my #2 mail account?

Whatever you want for the description or name for the account.

Host Name....mail. myweb.com?... me@myweb.com ?...myweb.com?....????

The incoming mail server address for the account.

User Name....me?.... me@myweb.com ?

The account's user name, which is usually the portion of the email address in front of the @ sign only, or the entire email address.

Password.....ppart##x ?

Your password for the account.

Outgoing Mail Server...smto.myweb.com ??

The outgoing mail server or what is called the SMTP server address for the account.

This is no different when you created the account with Outlook.

If iPad doesn't automatically find/setup an account, how is one to proceed.

The same information was required when you created the account with Outlook. Outlook certainly didn't automatically find/set up the account for you so why would you think creating the account with the iPad's Mail application would be any different?

There is an exception with the iPad's Mail application if the account is provided by one of the email account providers that is included with one of the email account presets when creating the account, which are:

Exchange
MobileMe
Gmail
Yahoo
AOL

If the account is not provided by one of the email account providers with an email account preset, you must select Other followed by entering all the required account information - no different when you created the account with Outlook.

You can check the account settings with Outlook and use the same when creating the account with the iPad's Mail application.

Thank you.

I did follow the same routine I used for defining the account to Outlook.
...but maybe I don't understand how iPad works....or maybe I made a mistake, even though I have carefully tried three times.

1. Does iPad work like Outlook? i.e., will it poll AOL and pull down mail then mgidev?..or do I have to manually switch from AOL to mgidev?

2. I really did expect to have iPad do "magic"...; not really, but I was having a hard time and the user manual does not help.

3. Any, after another very careful walkthru, with no result, I accidentally discovered the little box near the top left that changes from AOL to Accounts..then I can pick mgidev

4 It seems to be working now...will have to continue to explore to learn...do embedded pics come with mail ; how to save off attachments, etc

Thank you for the help.

Yes. You can set an account to be automatically checked for new messages based on your automatic Fetch setting for all accounts set to be automatically checked, or you can set an account to be manually checked for new messages.

Go to Settings > Mail, Contacts, Calendars > Fetch New Data.

Under the Fetch section is your default setting for automatically checking email accounts for new messages with the following options:

Every 15 Minutes
Every 30 Minutes
Hourly
Manually

If you select Manually, all email accounts will not be automatically checked for new messages in the background.

If you select any of the other 3 available options for email accounts to be automatically checked for new messages in the background, you can change an individual account to be manually checked if wanted or needed.

Select Advanced.

Select the email account you want to manually check for new messages.

The options will be Fetch (automatically checked for new messages based on your default Fetch setting for automatically checking email accounts for new messages), or Manual.

2. I really did expect to have iPad do "magic"...; not really, but I was having a hard time and the user manual does not help.

Except for an email account that includes an email account preset listed with my previous post, creating an email account with the iPad's Mail client is no different from creating an email account with Outlook or with any other email client.

An email account preset is included for an AOL account. You don't need to know the incoming and outgoing mail server settings for an account with an email account preset such as an AOL account.

3. Any, after another very careful walkthru, with no result, I accidentally discovered the little box near the top left that changes from AOL to Accounts..then I can pick mgidev

Correct - this is included with the user guide.

4 It seems to be working now...will have to continue to explore to learn...do embedded pics come with mail ; how to save off attachments, etc

Yes. If a photo is embedded which requires composing the email with HTML, the photo will be shown. The iPad's Mail client renders HTML, but does not support composing in HTML. A photo sent as a true attachment to a message (an embedded photo is not a true email attachment), the photo will appear inline or viewed in place, which is not the same as being embedded.

You can save a photo received with an email by selecting and pressing on the photo to bring up a save or copy selection.

You can't save any other attachments outside of the received message.
