1. Does iPad work like Outlook? i.e., will it poll AOL and pull down mail then mgidev?..or do I have to manually switch from AOL to mgidev?
Yes. You can set an account to be automatically checked for new messages based on your automatic Fetch setting for all accounts set to be automatically checked, or you can set an account to be manually checked for new messages.
Go to Settings > Mail, Contacts, Calendars > Fetch New Data.
Under the Fetch section is your default setting for automatically checking email accounts for new messages with the following options:
Every 15 Minutes
Every 30 Minutes
Hourly
Manually
If you select Manually, all email accounts will not be automatically checked for new messages in the background.
If you select any of the other 3 available options for email accounts to be automatically checked for new messages in the background, you can change an individual account to be manually checked if wanted or needed.
Select Advanced.
Select the email account you want to manually check for new messages.
The options will be Fetch (automatically checked for new messages based on your default Fetch setting for automatically checking email accounts for new messages), or Manual.
2. I really did expect to have iPad do "magic"...; not really, but I was having a hard time and the user manual does not help.
Except for an email account that includes an email account preset listed with my previous post, creating an email account with the iPad's Mail client is no different from creating an email account with Outlook or with any other email client.
An email account preset is included for an AOL account. You don't need to know the incoming and outgoing mail server settings for an account with an email account preset such as an AOL account.
3. Any, after another very careful walkthru, with no result, I accidentally discovered the little box near the top left that changes from AOL to Accounts..then I can pick mgidev
Correct - this is included with the user guide.
4 It seems to be working now...will have to continue to explore to learn...do embedded pics come with mail ; how to save off attachments, etc
Yes. If a photo is embedded which requires composing the email with HTML, the photo will be shown. The iPad's Mail client renders HTML, but does not support composing in HTML. A photo sent as a true attachment to a message (an embedded photo is not a true email attachment), the photo will appear inline or viewed in place, which is not the same as being embedded.
You can save a photo received with an email by selecting and pressing on the photo to bring up a save or copy selection.
You can't save any other attachments outside of the received message.
