Vs. Laptop For Basic Needs

Apr 9, 2010

Im seriously considering selling my 2008 2.2 macbook for an ipad. Heres why..

First off, I love my iphone and the UI. Multi-tasking never bothered me and if it did, 4.0 will change that.

Second, I cant wait for more magazines and newspapers to jump on board with dedicated e-versions, if they do. Does anyone know how many examples of print media will be on board in the short or long term?

I graduated college last summer and find that I only use my laptop for browsing the internet, playing music, uploading photos i take with my camera, and you tubing. Period. Seriously, thats all i've really been doing on it. None of the websites I typically visit involve flash, for the most part so visiting my favorite sites wouldnt be a challenge.

I figure if i really do need to type up a quick document or office type thing i can download and use pages/keynote/numbers for the ipad (haven't used it much except for typing and messing around with pages at an apple store). I never use my webcam, i dont watch or have any movies stored on my hard drive but i have a netflix account so i stream movies every once and a while, i know the pad has this ability.

The only time I ever use a USB was to charge my phone, since I always preferred to have important things emailed to me anyway. This actually brings up an important question. Is there a way to get all my documents I saved from college over the years from my macbook onto an ipad?

Will Replace Laptop / Better Than Current Laptop Models?

Aug 9, 2010

When will the iPad become better than current average laptop models? By this I mean powerful enough to run full programs and software which could completely replace my current laptop? My laptop has replaced my desktop. Now, it's just a matter of time when a tablet computer will be good enough to perform all the tasks of my laptop.

Basic File Manager In IOS 4?

Jun 11, 2010

The notion of not having a visible file system for is great - for 90% of tasks it really simplifies how users interact with the device, and makes for a streamlined experience. However, there are several very important instances where the inability to access and use a traditional file manager really limits the iPad.

These include the ability to manipulate documents using multiple applications, 'save' files from the web for later use, transfer files between devices/servers (including uploading files) This crucial 10% is the difference between the iPad as a very cool gadget, and the iPad as a viable replacement for a netbook.

Obviously adding a file manager given the current setup will be a challenge, but I see no reason why a very simplified version of 'Finder' shouldn't be possible. 'Documents' folders, behind a Finder icon, would add a ton of functionality without affecting the primacy of individual apps as the primary means of document interaction!

So, what are the chances we'll see this from Apple? And what are my current 3rd party options?

Only 1 App At A Time? - Basic As Multitasking

Jul 1, 2010

I never even thought to ask before purchasing. Seemed like a no-brainer, like not bothering to ask if your new car comes with a steering wheel. There's no way that Apple would have omitted something so basic as multitasking. There's got to be a way. If I can't browse on Safari while listening to Pandora, then this thing's going back.

Optional Basic File Manager

Jun 16, 2010

The concept of not having a visible filing system is a great innovation of iOS, that results in a streamlined, simple experience for 90% of tasks! However, there are very important instances where the inability to access files through a traditional 'finder' or 'windows explorer' really limits the iPad, which is being pitched as a netbook replacement.

These include, opening the same document with multiple applications, sending a file via e-mail or bluetooth, transferring files across a network/shared drive and uploading a file to the internet. At present these tasks are either impossible, or ridiculously difficult in what is an otherwise outstanding experience.

I understand Apple's hesitation to include such a feature, namely security and simplicity, but leaving it out all together rather than working towards a solution results in these significant limitations. A very basic, highly curated and limited implementation of finder (a finder app!) - where we can see document folders, tap file icons to 'open with' and 'send via', as well as transfer to or from a separate drive (physical or networked/cloud), would add a ton of functionality to the iPad. (and iPhone)

Best of all this would be completely optional, and only used in the 10% of instances where it is necessary! Thus the primacy of the individual app (arguably the hallmark of iOS) would not be undermined. Please Apple, make this happen!

So Many Basic Functions Missing? Why Apple?

Jul 19, 2010

I love the iPhone and i love the iPad but why do apple always leave so many basic functions out of their devices.

The iPhone was missing a decent camera, mms, multiple sms send, multi delete otions, contacts import from sim.....and many other things.....they eventually got there.

Then they bring the iPad out which i would buy tomorrow and use for business to display my brochures, PDF's, port folio and type up quotes but there is no printing option.....whats all that about?

I wouldn't mind if there was even a decent app available for it but i'd really like an option in Pages to print a bloody page!

Why do apple do this? I have a Canon ip100 that i have been using for wireless printing with my IBM Thinkpad to type up quotes and print brochures on the move........if I buy an iPad i can no longer do this. It's like stepping back 5 years!

Option With Either The Basic Notes App Are Made?

Apr 10, 2010

Thinking about getting one. One of the things I'd like to do with it is taking notes in meetings, etc... I played with one for ~10min in the Apple store yesterday, and I think the on-screen keyboard isn't that great for keeping up with the pace of a meeting (though, maybe I would just need to get used to it...).

Also, I'm thinking it may be easier to use a stylus for scribbling notes. Is this an option with either the basic Notes app or any other? Do any apps have handwriting conversion?

Basic Functionality Still Missing In Video App After 4.2 Update

Nov 24, 2010

I purchased an iPad about a month ago and was anxiously awaiting the 4.2 update because there is some basic functionality missing in the "iPod" and "video" apps on the iPad. What I'm referring to is the ability to play a Video Playlist. The "iPod" app recognizes my Music Videos via the ID3 tag info, the Video App recognizes them also. In the iPod app I have a Smart Playlist, the default Smart Playlist, that shows all my music videos. When you click on one music video title the video player app launches, it plays the one music video and stops. If you click on the play button in the iPod app when you have the Music Video Playlist selected it will play the entire playlist, but with Audio only! No Video. From my experience on this device with both the 3.2 software load and the new 4.2 software load you simply can't watch a video playlist. What is up with that?
