Sync Or Backup Is Slow?

Apr 10, 2010

I'm not sure if the sync is slow or if the backup is slow. Ipad says "Sync in Progress", but Itunes says "Backing up iPad.

Apps on the iPad include a free calculator, Amazon.com's Kindle for Iphone/iPad, Barnes and Noble ereader for Iphone, Ibooks ap, and the aps that came preloaded with the iPad.

SYNC appeared to take only a few seconds, but BACKUP has been going for three hours, and the backup status bar at the top of iTunes is creeping along. Right now it indicates the backup is about 1/3 complete.

Should sync/backup take this long for the iPad? If not, what can be done to correct it?

Sync Backup Too Slow

Apr 15, 2010

I'm on my second unit now. I have about 15 gigs of data on mine. I started the backup last night at 9:30 PM, it's now 5:15 AM and the backup is less than 50% complete. I'll try it on a different machine tonight (this one is Vista Ultimate 64-bit), but I had the same problem with my original iPad on three different boxes (two PC, one Mac). I've got about 2.5 gigs of music, 9 gigs of comic books in ComicZeal, and 3 gigs in Apps (mostly PDFs for PDFReader HD).

Slow Backup/took Around 11 Minutes To Backup?

Aug 5, 2010

I posted on a previous thread about slow backups that my Ipad with around 48GB of apps, music, films etc, took around 11 minutes to backup. Then suddenly a couple of days ago after about 5 hours I cancelled the backup as it was only about half way through.i worked out what had changed and it seems a rather strange phenomena similar to the reported wifi problem that appears to respond to turning off the auto screen brightness.

I don't like to turn the volume up too high when listening to music through ear buds as I value my hearing. This means that the base is generally lacking, so I went into the iPod settings and set the equaliser for base boost. Suddenly, the backup was just too slow to bear.

Some time back I had a problem with slow backup with my iPhone and resolved the issue by deleting the backup in iTunes (go to preferences > devices > backup) and doing a brand new backup rather than incremental. I did this with the iPad backup and left the iPad connected to my Macbook Pro overnight. It took six hours to backup from scratch but tonight I've done a sync and backup and it's back to around ten minutes.

Solution To Slow Backup

Aug 26, 2010

I finally "solved" my slow iPad backup problem. I say "solved" because it is still slow, but I understand what is causing it. At the end of the day, it is still slow, but at least it completes. After reading a TON of posts on the subject, I've come to the conclusion that there is more than one contributing factor to the slowness. Using the app here http://files.m4ko.de/applesync/ I was able to see what was going on.1. Imported pictures - I had over 2GB of imported pictures and videos which took forever. A lot longer than you would expect 2GB of data to be copied off a USB 2.0 device. Not sure what method Apple is using to backup this data, but all I can say is that it is SLOW. I opened up the folder through Windows Explorer, copied the files off the iPad, deleted them on the iPad, and it helped speed things up A LITTLE BIT.2. Apps - some apps take a lot longer to backup the first time than others. In my case, Zillow took 900 seconds. Yes, 900 seconds to backup. The Live View app I linked above let me see that some apps took a few seconds, some took a few minutes. If you have one app that is just locking up your backup for HOURS, then this will show you which one.3. iPad backup is just slow - I tested the backup by adding docs to Goodreader, for example, and backing up again. Backing up that one document was slower than it was to copy the document using the import feature, so whatever Apple is doing to keep things in sync is adding some tremendous overhead.I would suggest to backup often. After I found some offending apps that I deleted, the firstackup took about 45 minutes. If I hit backup right after that, it was less than 60 seconds. As I added apps to test, it would range from 2-3 minutes each time. So it obviously skips what is already backed up. If you wait too long and install too many apps and files, your next backup may take longer. However, if you go 1 hour and are less than half way through, there is something hanging up your iPad. The LiveView app should show you what it is and at least you can delete the app, get the backup completed, and reinstall the app.

Backing up 16, 32, or 64GB of data (or less since music and movies are not backed up) really shouldn't be rocket science. Hopefully this may help those folks out there who have given up on their backup.

Slow Backup Bug - Way To Submit A Bug Report?

Aug 16, 2010

I've been having incredibly slow backup problems with my iPad. My wife was foolish enough to leave her iPad here today, so I'm doing some experiments, and I think I've identified the problem. Her system had 2.5 gigs of stuff on it, and took less than 2 minutes to backup in iTunes on my desktop computer. I added ComicZeal, and copied 2 gigs of comics (261 issues) onto the machine. It took 90 minutes to back up.Delete the comics, less than a minute to backup.Add two gigs of music, less than 5 minutes to back up.Add back two gigs of Comic Books in ComicZeal, and I gave up on the backup at the 75 minute mark (about 2/3 through). So how do I file an official bug report?

Information:
iPad

Extremely Slow Backup - Favorite Apps

Nov 19, 2010

Is anyone else re-experiencing the slow backups? I thought this issue was resolved in a previous software update, but I am now experiencing backups taking hours and hours. I have tried many of the suggested "solutions" found online (iPad cable to computer, clear out backup file, turn off wifi, etc.), but I'm unwilling to part with some of my favorite apps that seem to now be taking hours to backup (Kindle, Goodreader, etc.). iOS 3.2.2, iTunes 10.0.1.22

Sync Is Very Slow?

Apr 18, 2010

I'm leaving So Cal tomorrow for Alaska. I decided to pack light and leave my laptop at home and only use my iPad. Can't wait to test the WiFi in the Seattle Airport, Anchorage Airport and the hotels near Anchorage and on Kodiak Island this week.Used a lot of useful tips from this forum and fully loaded my 16 GB beauty with movies "ripped" using Handbrake. Also, loaded it up with a lot of great apps that have been suggested in this forum. If Alaska Air has WiFi (I have had no WiFi issues yet), I will be one happy iPad owner!I am staying at a couple of hotels that claim they have WiFi...but some rooms have dataports. Based on suggestions here, I'm taking my AE to make sure I can connect my iPad via WiFi no matter what type of internet service they provide.

Why So Much Slow Sync?

Apr 24, 2010

I am hoping someone has solved this problem -- when I hook my iPad up, it takes FOREVER to talk to iTunes (spinning beach ball), then FOREVER to backup, then FOREVER to sync. And by FOREVER, I mean that entire sequence could take 30 mins and it is not doing anything. I really loathe the idea of having to rebuild my iTunes library, but I'm starting to run out of options.FWIW: same thing happens if I hook up my iPod Touch, however it does NOT happen with the iPhone -- that goes zippy fast like normal.

Slow Sync Or Not At All In Photo

Apr 10, 2010

If I select choose folders in itunes, select the my pictures folder i get the drop down which shows my picture files. If I select one with maybe only 15 pictures it just set there trying to sync and yes I did hit apply. It worked yesterday ever so slowly. If I remove my pictures at the top and select a file within my pictures the sync starts and loads the pictures. Problem with this is that it removes the previous load of pictures and i just get that one file.

Very Slow To Start Or Cancel Sync

May 6, 2010

When I try to sync my 16Gb iPad, it takes about 2 minutes (timed) from hitting "Apply" until sync begins. Meanwhile, the iPad is fully operational (Sync in Progress screen isn't up) and iTunes is locked up with a spinning cursor. My first attempt ended up in a dialog that sync could not occur because there was not enough room on the iPad (though it's basically the same content I have syncing successfully with my 16Gb iPhone, but that's another investigation. It then took another two minutes of iTunes lockup before it would respond to a click on the OK button to release the iPad and iTunes for me to try changing my sync settings

Won't Sync / Syncing Extremely Slow
