New Keyboard Dictionaries - Default English Dictionary ?
Nov 16, 2010
Does anybody know which dictionaries are meant in the following feature description for iOS 4.2 for ipad?"More than 30 new keyboards and dictionaries, including Arabic, Greek, and Hebrew (iPad only)"Most probably I'm dreaming but I would love to see a Dutch-English dictionary in ibooks working just like the default English dictionary. How cool would it be if Apple allowed 3rd party dictionary implementation into ibooks?
The iPad's built in dictionary (for defining words) is in American English (using words such as favorite instead of the correct favourite spelling), even though my language setting is set to British English.
I have been googling like mad to find out how to change the default dictionary on my kindle for ipad app from English to French. I actually bought the Kindle French dictionary, but now find it entirely useless as I cannot use it in text reading mode!
Is there any way that I can change the default dictionary in the Kindle for iPad to the French dictionary? Any assistance would be greatly appreciated!
i was playing with my brother's ipad trying to get the hang of it before i buy myself one. i noticed on the keyboard that there is no chinese language input like that in the iphone. is there really one or do i have to download a software or whatever. by the way, my bro bought in the states, and we are located in asia. wondering if it will be included in the asian release.
After reading Matthew's thread about the spacebar on the keyboard bugging him, it had dawned on me that there was no way to add custom words to the iPad's dictionary or set certain words to be replaced with other words, for example the word "ipad" will usually be auto corrected by the keyboard dictionary and changed to "iPad", however, if you type "ipads", the word is not auto corrected and the letter "p" in the word does not get capitalized nor is an apostrophe added into the word.
So, is there a hack that allows you to add custom words to the auto-correction dictionary or is there a hack that allows you to add certain words to be replaced by other words?
If such a hack does not exist, this hack could be made and put into Cydia by a dev and I would gladly pay for it (I hope a dev is reading this *wink*).
I want to know if the book reader feature in iPad has a dictionary. In other words, can I underline a word in a book and have it bring up its definition. If yes, can you provide a link to an official description that describes this feature? Also, if yes, is it included or an app?I've been doing a lot of browsing and have only found one iffy claim that it has a dict. The absence of touting this feature makes me wonder.Ideally I'd like to hear from someone that has used both a Kindle and the iPad's reader dictionary feature.
How do you find the auto correction on your iPad? Do you like the way it works? Would you like to see any improvements? I personally have been using it a lot and I now hate it. I hate it because it automatically corrects me without first asking me if I want the proposed changes. I would very much prefer to have an auto correction system that suggests one to three words. If the user doesn't specifically choose one of the suggested words, the system shouldn't change anything. Auto correction on the iPhone works exactly as bad as on the iPad, but I still have it enabled on my phone because of the smaller keyboard.
It's a great feature in iBooks that I can mark a word I don't know and get an explanation from the built-in dictionary. And it would even greater to get the same support for other languages (e.g. french).
I am using an iPad Mini running iOS7 and I am unable to download any dictionaries. When I try and highlight a word in Safari and tap Define, it will say No Definitions Found. So then I tap Manage and I see that I don't have any dictionaries downloaded. So I try downloading the American English dictionary by tapping the cloud icon but nothing happens. All I see is a circle to the right. Same thing happens with other dictionaries. I've tried a hard reset, tried closing and re-opeNing Safari to no avail. What is going on? I've attached a screenshot of this behavior.
You can see the dictionaries I'm trying to download are just sitting there with circles and nothing happening.
I noticed that after upgrading to iOS 4.2 on my iPad, there is not way to choose a default account in the notes app settings. For example, on my iPhone 4 if I go to Settings>Notes it has the 3 fonts listed and a Default Account choice.
This is not the case on my iPad. If I create a note on my iPad it seems to be created on the iPad and does not sync with MobileMe.Is this happening to anybody else?

I listened to the wise words and changed the default password for something less memorable.Yep, you guessed it, now I can't remember what I changed it to!Question #1. Does it matter? Will I need it for anything?
(ok, that was two questions)Question #2. Does restoring your iPad revert the password to the default?I know, I know... I really am this stupid!
During exploration I selected a different language under Settings but (like being trapped in a Myst age), now all the menus are in what appears to be Chinese and getting back to English now seems to have a hidden pathway. How does one reconfigure for English?
I bought my ipad in the USA before the English one was released. I would like to put in an English address but it won't let me until I clear the account which has 4 cents on it! How do I clear the account (bought in vouchers origionally) and when I change my address to an English account will I lose the applications I bought in America? Hope that makes sense!!
Can somebody tell me why I cant download the ipad version of Pages in ENGLISH?
I bought my ipad in Spain, where I HAPPEN to live. It comes in Chinese, Russian, German, Spanish and about 4 other languages, none of them ENGLISH. What IS going on? WHY? I though English was the global language anyway?

I am a new Ipad owner and am really enjoying what I have so far. (I am not so brave as to try an update to OS4 yet).
My question here though, is when I search ibook store how can I get it to display only books written in English?
Also, when I browse on my PC windows 7, I can not seem to get a "categories" option to narrow down what I am looking for (primarily history, biographies and classics). Is there a way of doing that. On my ipad, it does allow a "categories" option where I can select what category I want, but the non-english books are still listed.
For reasons I do not wish to discuss, I am forced to use the German iTunes store (bah).
To my surprise, they don't offer any JRR Tolkien stuff there - not even in German. I mean, how ridiculous is that ? I can buy the (english) hardcopy of LOTR in any well sorted book store but not on iTunes?
Anyways, without further ranting, has anyone figured out a legal way of getting the eBook version of LOTR on their iPads ? In Germany, mind you !
What eReader do I need and where would I buy from?
