ITunes 10 Aborts Update With Error 1631?

Dec 9, 2010

I've just switched to iTunes 10 and tried to "search for updates" for my lovely iPad 32GB+3G (without using a micro sim). But iTunes 10 aborts my update reques with a errorcode 1631. The message is like that: "itunes was unable to search for updates for the network operator settings for your iphone."

iTunes 9 was working fine. My iPhone is working with iTunes 10 as expected. So, what should I try, before downgrading to iTunes 9 again?

Information:
iPad 32GB+3G
Mac OS X (10.6.4)

Ipad 4.2.1 Update Unknown Error

Apr 15, 2011

I had been trying to update my jailbroken ipad running on 3.2.2 to 4.2.1 for a few weeks now. I have downloaded the ipsw file and tried updating the ipad using shift+update multiple times. I keep getting the error message after verifying my ipad: The iPad "****" cannot be updated, an unknown error occurred (3194).I cannot restore my ipad using a 3.2.2 ipsw file either.I have searched different forums and used the apple support site, and found out that i was supposed to add 74.208.10.249 gs.apple.com to the host file. After that i tried updating again and after my iPad successfully entered recovery mode, the same error message appeared.

Attempting IOS 3.2.1 Update - Could Not Be Restored Unknown Error 1014 Shows

Sep 10, 2010

Tried to update my iPad wifi+3G tonight. Got error message in iTunes:The iPad "iPad" could not be restored. An unknown error occurred (1014).I'm stuck now and can't use my iPad because the iPad goes to recovery mode, and when I try again, the same thing happens. Have tried about 6 times. One time, tried and I believe succeeded in getting into DFU mode - dark screen on iPad while iTunes said it had found a device in recovery mode - but that restore ended up the same way.No iPad now. Bummed. Is this hardware? I hope not. Please help if you know anything about this. I can find very little about this error.

Unknown Error 21 On ITunes When Try To Restore IPad 2?

Apr 7, 2012

It all started when I was deleting an e-mail (from an uknown adress), then Mail was closing and I went back to my homescreen. Suddenly I see that all my purchased apps where gone, only shortcuts to Safari and the original Apple programs were in place. Then I tried to push the home and the power button to restart the device, it turns back on again without any affect.

I connect my Ipad to the Mac Pro running OSX 10.6.8. and open iTunes, then I tried to recover a safety copy from the list, without any luck. The result of this ends with a device showing just the Apple logo a while, and then the iTunes wire. The problem with showing "unknown error 21" in iTunes seems to be a usual Windows third-party issue, but I`m running it on a Mac.

I tried all basic steps in the Apple support, but it still came back with the message: "detected iPad in recovery mode...you will have to restore it before it can be used with iTune", and then a message that tells me the Ipad device can not me restored, unknown error 21.

I have no firewall, the time is correct, I'm running the latest iTunes version 10.6.1, I can connect to the iTunes store and it looks okay. I connected the original 30-pins connector on the back, unplugging all other USB-devices, I checked this and several other things, but I just can't get it to work. Before it turned into this "Brick" I noticed that the indication on used memory for programs (green) went down to zero and "other" (yellow) were the biggest area (app.14 GB).

IPad 2 :: Restore Fails With Unknown Error(1) - ITunes And Recovery Mode Logo

Dec 9, 2014

iPad2 64GB was sluggish and we tried to update with latest iOS update, security 2014-005 and latest iTunes on iMac 12.01 It enters a recoverymode with the iTunes logo and connector symbol displayed on the screen. Recognized that iPad is connected and proceeded to restore to factory condition. Goes through several stages, FW verification, restore etc but fails to proceed past a certain point and puts up an unknown error (1) occurred message. Disabled firewall and tried restore and it failed in the same spot. Tried using power + home button combos to enter DFW or restore mode. None of them worked.

Took it to the Apple store and was told that it can't be debugged further because it did not yet boot up ( if it has the iTunes and connector symbol it must be in some state that it can be interacted with?) It's physically in a perfectly beautiful condition, nothing funky (jail breaking etc ) done to it, well taken care of. The tech said that he can offer a replacement for 299$ after he tried to restore it twice without success. I am surprised that this tech thinks that it cannot be probed with some low level FW tools through the serial connector to determine the system state.

Error Saying - Could Not Be Restored - An Unknown Error Occurred (40)

Aug 29, 2012

Here is an email I've drafted out in attempt to send to Apple but instead they have me an error saying,"We're sorry, the transaction cannot be completed at this time. Please try again later or contact us." Twice...

Quote:

Recently I've had my iPad hang. It hung for so long I decided to restart my iPad so I held the sleep button and home button until it restarted on its own.

Upon restarting, the Apple logo displayed as per usual and then came the iTunes logo and a picture of a USB below pointing to the iTunes logo. I assume this is the recovery mode. So I proceeded to click "Restore". It started downloading the update and went on to restore my iPad.

At the end of the restoration then came the error saying,"The iPad "iPad" could not be restored. An unknown error occurred (40)."

This would not be a PC issue as I tried restoring it from my laptop which failed and so I tried it on my PC which failed as well. My network is also not the issue as I am fully connected to the internet with no issue syncing my other Apple devices and updating etc.. And since I have been able to sync with no problem (both on my laptop and my PC) for my other Apple devices, I strongly believe that it is not an issue with my security software.

I've read somewhere on the internet saying,"..due to out-of-date or incorrectly configured security software". Could it be that some part of the software on my iPad that saves the date stopped on that very day when it became "bricked"? And that now it is another date and that conflicts with the part of the software that uses this information? Would it help if I changed my desktop's date and try again? Please understand that at this point in time I've tried all I can and frankly am frustrated already. So I would like to know if it would work before trying.

So I've decided to make a trip down to a local Apple authorised service provider to see if they can fix this. They have stated that it is an issue that customers face and that some can be restored and some can not be restored. They then tried to restore for two times and concluded to me that the device is unable to be restored. They went on to offer me a 1-to-1 replacement where I would have to send in my current unit and pay a fee of S$400++ to have it replaced for a brand new iPad version 1 with the exact same specifications.

Tell me frankly and honestly that this offer is genuinely a good offer and I will take it. But take no offence; who in the right mind is going to pay 400 bucks for a device that is two generations backdated.

The apple authorised service provider also stated that the problem with my iPad was that of a hardware issue. I have no dropped it a single time, I have not ever used it until its burning hot, and there isn't a single tinge of a burnt smell coming off from it. If what they say is true then I have to say I'm a little disappointed in the lifespan of this iPad. And the standard 1-year warranty is definitely not fair for a product like this. You have to agree that in a mass production no matter how careful or accurate manufacturing machines are there are bound to have issues that may have produced a compromised product.

So here's a quick summary of the things I've tried:

- opened iTunes, connected device, set to DFU mode and tried restoring.

- tried with a laptop, PC Desktop.

- tried with a different 18 pin USB cable.

- tried self-diagnosing the issue after reading your troubleshooting page,
iTunes: Specific update-and-restore error messages and advanced troubleshooting

- delete the iOS software file (.ipsw) and retried restoring again.

- sent to an Apple authorised service provider located at, eServ@313Somerset by Micro 2000 Technology Pte Ltd (6.5 kms) 313@Somerset (Somerset MRT), #B3-22 (Beside M1), 313 Orchard Road, Singapore 238895

All of which ended with a disappointment that my iPad died out of the blue and is now still unable to be restored back to factory settings.

IPad 2 :: App Store Error "An Unknown Error Has Occurred" Message

Mar 17, 2012

I am using ipad2 with version 5.1. Whenever I try to use the app store either to update an app or to get a new app I get the message "An unknown error has occurred." There is no error number. This started yesterday I believe. I know there are many similar questions on this site, but I haven't found a solution that works for me. I have tried powering off and back on again. My wifi connection is good. I also have an ipod (2nd generation), and I am not having a problem with that. Does anyone have a suggestion for me?
