Before updating to IOS 5, there was a single button to switch all notifications on or off together, a useful feature when going to bed and needing the iPad for an early morning wake up call from the alarm.

Now I can't seem to find a single button to do this, just an individual one for every app! This is going to be a pain every night and every morning, nor am I missing something? As it was, I was woken up in the middle of the night with a Reminder which I had set as a test before going to bed, not realising i had activated the alarm on it, but that was a one off.

If I leave the notifications as active and set the volume to mute, then I won't hear the alarm in the morning. Am I missing something obvious here?

You can switch to airplane mode which will disable all non-local notifications. You can also switch to silent mode, making sure you switch off vibrate. Alarms cut through the silent mode.

The iPad User Manual for iOS 5 says there's a way to turn all notifications off under Settings->Notifications (p. 116). I don't see it. Location services does have a global on/off switch at the top; Apple clearly needs to provide one for notification services.

As a workaround, wouldn't disabling your WiFi connection effectively stop your overnight notifications?

Thanks for the replies, but if I switch to Airplane mode, the data won't be synchronised with the Cloud and other devices.

Also, by simply switching it off, the notifications will still come through, unless you mean switching completely off, whereby the above synchronising will not happen, plus the alarm will not go off in the morning.

I will try the silent mode, as I didn't realise alarms would override the silent mode.

It was a lot easier with just one button to disable or enable all notifications at once. LOL

P.S. disabling the wifi only wouldn't stop it, the 3G would kick in instead. As it happens, my 3G is much faster than my broadband too, but that has nothing to do with this.

Turn wifi and 3G off simple!

Thank you, but by turning off wifi and 3G means the iPad will not synchronise to the Cloud or other devices.

Well that's what you wanted right? I don't think you need your feeds while sleeping! You can always turn everything back on in the morning and still getting everything to sync to normal. I don't think it's a big deal to not have all your devices to sync for 8 hours.

Well, I will have to see how it goes then. My broadband speed is just too slow, so it would be useful to be able to synchronise overnight when I am not using the iPad. It was just the notifications which I wanted to be switched off, a very simple thing to do before the update.

If your iPad is on all evening, all should be synchronized at bedtime. What would cause it to get out of sync overnight? Do you have replicants running around all night updating documents on Macs and other iOS devices? You will get mail and you'll get occasional updates of iOS apps. Otherwise, I'm not sure what sort of things will get out of sync overnight.

Apple documents that there is a global switch to turn notifications on and off. I provided you with the reference from their manual. Why don't you file a bug report with them asking them to make iOS work as it's documented in the iPad User Guide?

Yeah, with iOS5 there is no easy way to "kill" all your notification with a single switch like the previous 4.X versions. You have to do it one by one which is tedious so better to silence the device. Hopefully Apple will add it back in soon.
