When converting a DVD "vob" file to the MP4 format, what is the best screen resolution to use for playing back on the iPad? Thanks...

If by MP4 you are referring to H.264/AAC files, then I would recommend something on the order of 848x480 to 852x480. This represents a reasonably optimum combination of resolution, file size, and encoding time/efficiency. Anything larger and you are wasting time and file storage space and not gaining anything in the way of upscaling quality and any lower and you are trading quality for smaller files and faster encodes.

Actually Jon I crop my videos to 848 for more efficient encoding of the h.264.

Roger that...

For anyone who doesn't get what David is referring to here, the H.264 encoder is most efficient when the dimensions are evenly divisible by 16. (I.e., 848x480 is a 53x30 block-16 encoding matrix) At the very least, dimensions should be kept divisible by 2 -- especially with regard to the height dimension which often produces a green horizontal "edge" or "fringe" with odd dimension heights.
