I just bought a ipad on ebay and I want to reset the ipad to factory settings just like you just opened from the brand new box. Can I delete the whole thing and reload the OS?

Thanks

No need to reload the OS. Just hold the home button and screen switch for a few seconds until to see a message about resetting.

That will return it to the factory settings.

Uhh, there's an app for that. Actually, it's under the Settings in the "General" menu. Select "Reset" and it gives you a number of Reset options.

You are completely wrong! Holding the home and power buttons only resets, it does not reset any settings or wipe any info off the device. As the other user said, Settings-General-Reset-Erase All Contacts and Settings.

Talk about wrong advice!

Does it really erase the previous owner's personal information? And delete all the apps?

Stay away from the Erase All Content and Settings option in the Settings app. It takes ages and more often than not you'll get stuck and have to restore it anyway.

The best way to remove all traces of the previous owner's data ( I can't believe he hasn't done it himself before selling it!) is to restore and set up as new in iTunes.

If you don't care about jailbreaking your device, go ahead and restore it in iTunes. You'll get the current 3.2.2 iOS on your iPad.

Not sure of how you were doing it, but Erase took just a few minutes for me.
