Onscreen keyboard won't appear how to I force it to?
On certain websites -- especially ones heavy on flash - even though it's an area for text input, I can't get the keyboard to appear. Is there any way to force the keyboard to show?

Very easily could be a field that is being controlled through flash, which Safari for iOS does not support. At all. Hard to say based on the amount of information provided. The keyboard can only be opened by tapping the screen on an area where typing text is allowed. there is no manual override or other way of displaying it.
Does this occur on site that do not run flash, or in other apps?

I Have Xfinity email and when I access it using the Safari browser, it defaults to a mobile version with no traces of Flash anywhere in the email area of the site. I'm not sure what you are seeing or why you are seeing that particular version of the email website.
Another option ..... XFinity has a pretty decent email app that works quite well and has more features that the built in mail app has. You will not be able to download it in France, I'm sure, but when you get back to the U.S., consider using it.

IIf the site is using Flash in the text entry area, which some sites do that heavily depend on flash, you will not be able to enter text.
try using an alternate browser such as iCab or puffin.

Actually Ralph, if flash is the issue, iCab won't help.
I'm traveling and not getting on the internet that much (in Normandy, France staying at a bed and breakfast), so will answer all here. First thank you for your help. I am attempting to access my email on Comcast/Xfinity and it is super heavy on flash. I now know I can't override and that does help. I will try the other browsers suggested here and thank you all for taking the time. Really appreciated. Carol
I'm not a Comcast user, but do not recall anyone mentioning that the web mail interface uses flash or that there isn't an alternative available. A couple of options to explore:
