Is iPad for me?

Hello, my name is Matt, and I currently am enrolled in Clearwater, Highschool. It is my senior year and i will be getting ready for college. My school is currently the first in the nation to assign Kindle to each of its students. How ever, the kindle device will be limited. We will not be alloud to buy personal books and put on are kindles. So I went to the principle and asked if we were permited to use personal Kindles, and the answer was no, we cant put the school book's on personal kindles. So i asked about an iPad, and he seemed onboared. Apparently iPad, has an app called "kindle" does that simply transfer your books over. Also we would be able to use the device in class. Would the iPad be convenient for this? Also could i buy highschool textbooks for the device. As a highschool student transfering into college would you recomend the iPad?

HI Matt,

If you are anywhere near an Apple store, it be a good idea to get help straight from the source.

You can read about the Kindle app for iPad here. http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/kindle/id302584613?mt=8

Also could i buy highschool textbooks for the device.

The problem there could be that these books may not be in the correct format for the iPad to read.

If you can't use a Kindle due to the limitation, an iPad would be the way to go.

As I said before, if you can, visit an Apple store.

I don't have a 3G, so I wouldn't know the cost. Most colleges have free wifi. And I bet you'll be visiting coffee shop wail in school and they mostly have free wifi. I don't know if your high schools provides this for students. But, you did say your talking with your principle ask him what Internet access you will have at school. If none you'll have get get the 3G.

...Also, now that they no longer have the unlimited 3g data plans. How much will 2gb's of data get me?

Basically, just don't stream radio or video. When you need your "fix" of Netflix or Pandora, then do that over Wi-Fi. On my Windows Mobile phone, I listen to a particular radio station's stream due to poor reception in my area. About 3-4 hours per day (1-2 hours in the morning and 1-2 hours in the afternoon.) My usage is around 1.5GB per month. On the phone, I only surf to a few news websites so the majority of the usage is from the streaming radio. (That phone still has and unlimited data plan so I'm not worried yet.)

Otherwise, for just "basic" web surfing and email, you'll probably use less than 2GB. But you may want to consider leaving 3G turned off, and turn it on when necessary, to prevent accidentally using up your allotment.

Hi Matt!
If your principal is on board, definitely go for the iPad. In addition to the kindle app, there are other e-reader apps available that will probably have the textbooks you need, particularly when you get to college next year. If you can, definitely get the 3G version, you might not always have access to wi-fi when you need it. Just save the heavier downloading for when you do have access and you will be fine with the 2 gig limit. I would also recommend that you get iWork (Pages, Numbers, Keynote). You can download these individually if you don't need all three. It's amazing how much homework you can get done on your iPad! I got my degree awhile ago, but my job requires me to take University classes (several per year) in order to keep my certification current. I use the iPad all the time for this, and it's invaluable. Best of luck to you!
