I have some excel files in Dropbox and am thinking of purchasing Numbers (I already have Pages) but not sure how to download my Dropbox file so I can work on it in Pages or Numbers, if I buy it. When I download the file to the ipad, I get options to open in several apps but Pages is not one of them. I do not want to buy Numbers and find I cannot download files to the app to work on. Any advice please?

If you use the Dropbox app, all you have to do is tap the doc/docx file you want to open in Pages. As soon as you see it, tap the arrow in the upper right corner to get these options:

Select "Open In...", then a variety of apps that work with your file will show up. One of them should be Pages. Tap it to open the file there.

If you can't see it, slide to the left, perhaps there are some more apps to choose from.
It works the same with Numbers and xls/xlsx files.

Thanks, I was doing all that but I only get "open" in Pages option when it is a doc file. I guess if I purchase Numbers, I will be given the Numbers option to open excel files from Dropbox.

That's correct. Doc opens in Pages, xls in Numbers and ppt in Keynote.

And yes, you have to have the app (Numbers here) installed before you get the "Open in" dialog for it. Impossible otherwise.

Numbers looks so attractive but some of the reviews are not good....I will probably continue using Quickoffice to open excel files

Sent from my iPad using iPF
