The screen seems to be pretty tough.
If you're worried go ahead and install one. Can't hurt.
Unless you're in a particularly harsh environment, I'd forego any screen protector. You'll have a much nicer user experience without it.
That said, using something like Apple's Smart Cover is not a bad idea when transporting your iPad in a backpack or briefcase or whatever you use to get it from place to place.

I highly recommend the Smart Cover. Protects the screen, attaches magnetically, and can fold up.
I've had my original iPad for about a year and a half now. I've always kept it in a case, but have never had a screen protector on it. It doesn't have a single scratch after all this time. But if I wasn't keeing it in a case, I might be tempted to put one on. 🙂
Those smart covers are pretty nice. And more and more cases are coming out for the new iPad on places like Amazon.
