.mp4 video play in iTunes, syncs to iPad but won't play

I transferred some videos from my grandparents' camera to their iPad. It was already in .mp4 format, iTunes plays it fine, and it copied the videos over. The thumbnails are displayed under Videos, but when I play the video I only get a black screen whilst the audio plays (correctly) in the background. Also, when I tap the screen, no video interface comes up.

From your description it appears that the video portion of the file is not supported by the iPad. There are many variations in the MP4 format and the ipad doe not support all of them. SInce it plays in Itunes, you should be able to convert the format to an iPad one by going to the Advanced tab in iTunes and clicking on the Create and iPad or Apple TV Version. I would first delete it from you iPad which is done via syncing.

I am having the exact same problem.

I've found that you can get the video player app to work again by doing a search for a video that you know works properly and launching the video from there. That will at least get the app working again.

I have also found that deleting the video from your ipad and resyncing it will sometimes work - although not always (and then sometimes they just stop working if you stop watching a video and go back at a later date).

If you find a solution, btw, please post here so others can try what worked for you.
