I assume the common (both for iPhone and iPad) will copy over with its data, and non-iPad apps won't sync over?

I'm pretty sure you can't restore an iPhone backup to an iPad...

Really??
So if I am playing a game on iPhone, I will have to re-download for iPad, but losing all progress and data???
Also what about things like Calendar?? I can not move its' data from the iPhone to iPad?

That blows.

You share calendar data between iOS devices by synch-ing, not through backups. the idea is that you maintain a master desktop calendar that updates/is updated by your portable devices. You can also sync to a MobileMe calendar if you use one.
