I recently purchased an ipad3 and am looking for a fast and effective way to convert my HD MKV collection to mp4 or any HD format supported by the iPad 3.

Batch conversion would be ideal and I don't mind paying for the right software. (OS is Windows 7 BTW )

Any advice and recommendation would be appreciated.

TIA

I use Handbrake. It usually takes around 20-25 minutes per 2 hour film, but this will depend on your hardware. Once it's done, add the new file to your iTunes library and Sync.

Or, you could look into some programs out there (most you have to pay for) that all you to watch MKV on your iPad.

Thanks Pilot, Handbrake is an OSX software AFAIK and I am on win7 :(

All movie apps I tried struggle with MKVs, especially with the audio, this is why I decided to convert (and also to reduce file size) but there is so many windows software out there, I am looking for a recommendation ...

Handbreak runs on just about anything including windows 7.

So since you are new to video on computers you should also look at VLC. It runs on all OSs and plays *everything*. I don't know if our apple friends have this issue but on windows 7 the default media player is awful and can hardly play any sort of video one might find on the Internet.

Thanks Study and barjam,

I actually use KM Player and GOM Player (as well as VLC) on the PC ;)

It is my understanding that Handbrake is very slow hence my request for a fast software. (I used to use handbrake on the Mac and it was taking hours for a 3GB file!)

I am currently using Rebox.net and it does a fantastic job of repackaging and converting audio, it is quite fast and free :)

The issue is it cannot change the video output to reduce file size and I am currently using Aristash (Fat32 4BG Max, although the next firmware will support exFAT), so I have some files I need to shrink by a few GBs :D

I am looking for a fast and easy software: Select the MKV, Select output (iPad3) select maximum file size and press start :)

If anyone knows of such a software please let me know..

TIA

Can't you just use an app to just watch the mkv files.
AVPlayer HD, GoodPlayer, etc. Not free, but convenient.

It seems plenty fast to me. Worst case scenario you kick it off over night and batch up a ton of stuff.

Philadelphia area.
Hell, I just use the Airvideo app and stream my videos from my PC. I don't use up space on my iPad and I can watch any video in my collection anywhere I have WiFi.

I recently bought Pro Player for $5 (I think that was the price) and it works well with playing MKV without having to convert the file.

Goodplayer plays MKV natively, and does it quite well at that. It does have very small stutters at 1080p, but 720p-1080i are smooth as silk.

right, the days of being tied to iTunes formats for movies are over. heck, I have an 8TB NAS stuffed with videos that I can stream to the iPad from anywhere, even over LTE (ok, big 1080p movies doesn't work so hot streaming, but 720p TV shows are fine).

You may not need to recode video. Try got2sent and similar.

Another vote for Air Video.

You can either select live streaming, live conversion or offline conversion depending on what your needs are. The best part, you don't have to buy the most expensive iPad to store all the videos on your device, only convert the video's you need for one trip, all your mkv's stay on your PC or Mac.
