GPS on Wi-Fi Only iPad .. it might just work

Howdy,
I wasn't aware of it when I got my Wifi only iPad that GPS is not on it.
Only an issue if you intend to use it for navigation, but we might.

Now I have used 3G on my wifi only device http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=2408472&tstart=30 but to date no GPS. Then looking through my box of tricks I found a GPS, bluetooth device (used with laptops etc)and rechargeable via mini usb.

I think the right software/app on the iPad needs to look for the GPS device to be able to use it.

Has anyone tried this yet ? The devices are about 1" by 2" so very easy to put in your pocket and worked great with the ipaqs and similar devices here is a picture of mine

I would also like to add that I find it quite frustrating that not only does my wifi pad, not have gps,
but I woudl be forced to jail break it, to use an aplication like http://www.ringwald.ch/cydia/gps/ that for some reason apple does not have or support. Is there any good reason that my Ipad can not pull GPS information of a paired Bluetooth device like a garmin? Or is this intentional sandbagging?

I have a Columbus V-900 GPS logger that I use for geotagging my photos. It supports bluetooth for pairing with cell-phones and other devices that could take advantage of GPS.

I tried pairing my iPod touch to it, and it would not pair. I suspect the iPad would not be able to pair with it either.

It would be a really nice feature, but there would need to be two layers available in the iPhone OS to support it. One layer to do the actual pairing, and another layer to hook into the built in location services to use the GPS data. The former might be possible to write as an app, but the latter would need to be built into the iPhone OS and I doubt it is.

Too bad.

Hmm. I've got a 'Location Services' option under the general settings. It's turned on. Maps, Yellow Pages, and Weatherbug have all prompted to use location services, and pulled my location. Since I don't have the 3G version -I have to assume that it pulled from a gps receiver in the unit.

I know they have wifi-based location services, but this worked out at my remote property in the country too.

If it pulled my location by my wifi, then I am really impressed.

There's no GPS receiver in the WiFi-only version. Location Services can pull data from WiFi signals that are far too weak to be used to data transfer, as well as iTunes itself, which contains location information in the user database (your ZIP code, street address, etc.)
