Just set up my email account on iPad and it stays loading on checking For Email. I have checked my email account using my iPhone and my laptop, they retrieve my messages as normal, so I don't think it is a gmail issue?
I have been through the setup twice and even added my secondary account which does the same thing.
Sorry if this has been posted before, I hope one of you can help?
I would try the following in this order.
1) Delete that mail account.
2) Restart the ipad by holding down the home & sleep button until the apple appears. (Past the slider)
3) Recreate the email account. See if it now works.
If still not working, try: Restore ipad from computer-itunes.
Then verify the email account and retest.
If it STILL doesn't work, take it to an apple store with your iphone that is working for email and let the expert assist you in figuring out why the ipad isn't working with the same setups as the iphone. You can make reservations on line (I think) at www.apple.com/retail > view all stores > select UK from dropdown. Select your store.

As a side note I noticed that you said you got through for iPhone 4 for Thursday. Have you been able to pre order or are you joining the queue on Thursday?
I pre-ordered the iPhone 4. I started at opening time for on-line orders at 4am eastern US time. Tried many times until I went back to bed for a few hours. Then I tried all day, off and on, then finally got a successful order at around 8:30 PM eastern US time. I was almost done trying, but then I got a successful order confirmation.
That day, I went to Apple store in Jacksonville FL and they told me to get on one of their computers and order on-line. (big whup. I could do that at home.) So I went to AT&T and their computers were down, but they wanted my credit card, signature and me to sign the contract and "they will place my order when the computer comes back up". I was born at night, but not last night.
So back home I went and kept trying. The rest is iPhone 4 history....
