Mail count on Mail icon doesn't reset

In the past few days the mail count displayed on the mail icon has failed to reset when my inbox is cleared. The number just keeps increasing as new mail comes in and is cleared. I tried restarting, but that had no effect. Any suggestions?

iOS$ for the phone has: "See messages from all your accounts in a unified inbox." I would expect the iOS4 for the iPad to have same feature.

I found the problem. I have a second email account. Messages were piling up in that account. Apparently the inbox shows mail from only one account at a time. That's something Apple needs to fix.

Not sure this is the fix for you either, but I had a message count that drifted upward by 1 or 2 each month until I declared ware on the problem.

Even though I don't sync e-mail through MobileMe, I found my mysterious 38 e-mail sitting in my MobileMe InBox. Once deleted, both Windows & iPad quit reporting the Mystery Mail!

OK, I found the fix (sort of). I have two accounts, both synced through iTunes. The .me account responds to the status of read or not-read mail, regardless of where the activity took place--the computer, iPad, iPhone, etc. The other, a non Apple account, does not. So when mail from the other account is read and/or deleted from another source, the iPhone mail icon badge will reflect the changes but the iPad mail icon badge will not. So the fix is really not a true fix. I disabled the non Apple account on the iPad. I'm sure that supporting non Apple accounts is not high on their priority list but, hopefully, this will be resolved in a future update.
