I am new to apple computing. Until purchase of iPad have been a user of microsoft products.constantly reminded to have firewall and antivirus software when using windows to surf web otherwise severe risk of financial and personal identity theft. Why no such warnings/ software when using safari and apple iPad applications?

Apple products aren't prone to the issues plaguing Microsoft products at this time. Also, since you can't download anything to the iPad, you can download a virus.
