My 3G ipad is doing the same thing: claims its not charging when docked to MacBook, but seems to be getting a bit of juice anyway. Plugged it in direct to the wall last night and it charged real slow. Switched to new power converter that shipped with it and it did much better. Appears iphone adapters may be a bit different from those shipping with the ipad - though they look exactly the same. However, mine may just be getting on a bit.

Just plugged my new iPad into my Mac Pro tower and it will not charge. AQpple can spin the "high powered" thing all it wants but plugging one apple product into another should ALWAYS work. So now I have to have two cables coming to my destop, one to charge the iPad and another to be able to sync it. Maybe apple could come up with an A/B switch to handle the problem (just kidding, having this issue is really stupid). Hello Apple hire some Qa people already.

I've done the same and been a bit surprised. The free USB slots in the main body (4 of them) will all run a portable hard drive I have (and transfer data at the same time), but the slots in the keyboard and Apple monitor won't.

However, none of them are charging the iPad.

How can you tell whether a USB slot should provide enough power or not (obviously by trying it, but is there another way?).

"I looked at the "about this Mac" bit and it says, under USB that the iPad is connected, current available is 500 mA and current required is...... 500 mA. So I'm not sure why it says it isn't charging..... is there an electrician in the house??"

If you look at the charger that came with the iPad you'll see that output is 2.1A. People should not be expecting a quick charge or any charge at all from USB connections. This is not some design flaw. The iPad battery is not the tiny battery you"ll find in an iPod or iPhone. It simply requires more current to charge properly.

One critique for apple is that they should have distinguished the iPad charger differently than the existing iPod charger that looks the same to avoid confusion and initial headaches.

Use your supplied charger as it will simply charge much quicker than any USB connection that often vary in output as it is.

I find that if I connect it before I go to bed, it's 100% charged when I wake up in the morning (if I'm using the PC)..

otherwise, I just connect it to power when I'm at working, and it charges much more quickly.

It is what it is, just realize that USB does not have the power necessary to charge the battery quickly...
