Now that iOS 4.3 has been out a good long time, and Apple has restored our precious rotation lock, who finds themselves using it? Or do you still use the switch as a silencer?

Personally, mine is set to rotation lock and I use it frequently.

I usually keep the volume down on my iPad so there's no need to have it be a silent switch for quick access. Orientation lock all the way.

I don't use it at all...

On my iPad 1 for the first few months, I used the rotation lock switch.

Then Apple changed it to mute, and I stopped using the switch all together.

On my iPad 2, I've never used the switch. I don't even know if it works. LOL

I've gotten accustomed to using the gesture to rotate lock it. (four finger swipe up, swipe right, tap.)

Rotation lock. I'm constantly using this. If you want a mute switch, just hold the volume down rocker for a second. It's the same effort as the switch.

+1. This is why I never understood why Apple changed the original function of the switch in later firmware.

I don't use the button that often, but its set to silent.
Lately i've been double clicking home if i want to lock my orientation.

Rotation lock on my iPad and silent switch on my iPhone. For example, when I'm watching a movie, moving the iPad even an inch can cause the display to turn completely, so it's easier to just flip the switch on the side instead of opening up the multitasking bar menu and finding it. Besides, how often does anyone mute their iPad?

If I'm watching a movie and don't want Mail or notification sounds I use the mute switch. The volume switch will get rid of ALL sound, including that of the movie.

that's exactly how it works on the iphone too, it's just strange to think about the ipad as having alerts. i still don't really think about it, even though it chimes at least a couple times a day.

Exactly the reason why I keep mine as the mute switch too. :)

Besides, screen lock is a lot less useful than it is on the iPhone. The iPad is usually pretty good about not going crazy with the orientation switching.

I use rotation lock. If I want it muted I just hold down volume rocker and it will silence it.

That won't, however, silence everything (like the keyboard noise). Also, you wouldn't be able to hear videos/iPod.

The mute switch essentially eliminates any sounds you don't "request" yourself (like a video or music).

That is with some obscure hack, tho, right? Cause that won't work on mine.

No obscure hacks. Just install XCode 3 + iOS SDK (free) on your Mac and plug your iPad to it. Boom! You can use the gestures immediately.

Of course rotation lock ...since no one call me on my iPad I don't need a mute on that one. Music also goes vis iPhone.
Not only while reading in bed the rotation lock is useful at work when want to make sure it don't change unintended.
