When I try to send an email, I get a pop up saying, Cannot send mail, connection to the outgoing server cwmx.com failed. Any advice how to restore connection? Thanks.

You can try quitting mail completely - turn Mail off in that account - restart the iPad - turn mail on again - and then see if it will send emails.

Go to the home screen first by tapping the home button. Double tap the home button and the task bar will appear with all of your recent/open apps displayed at the bottom. Tap and hold down on the mail icon until it begins to wiggle. Tap the minus ➖ sign in the upper left corner to close the app. Tap the home button. when you are done.

Go to Settings>Mail, Contacts, Calendars>Your email account>Mail>Off

Restart the iPad by holding down on the sleep button until the red slider appears and then slide to shut off. To power up hold the sleep button until the Apple logo appears and let go of the button.

Go back to Settings>Mail, Contacts, Calendars>Your email account>Mail>On

One thing that we tend to forget is the possibility that there are problems with your email provider - it has happened to me before - and not all that long ago in fact.

I'm having the same problem that I see others are having; I can no longer send emails from either my iphone 3GS or my iPad (3rd generation). Both of these have worked in the past.

With the iPhone, I get an error message saying 'the server does not allow relaying'.

With the iPad, I get an error message saying that the connection failed to the outgoing server cwmx.com.

I do not know if both these messages refer to the same problem. Both devices are using the same email address, and both used to work.

How can I fix this?

Follow up to my previous reply:

The fix that Demo recommended worked for my ipad...ONCE. After that, I again received the cwmx.com error.

I've now tried to send email from the iPhone with both 3G and wi-fi, and the same with the iPad (wi fi and 4G LTE). I still get the error messages.

At this point, I'm not sure whether to call my ISP (my email works just fine on my desktop), ATT (normally pretty useless for tech questions), or Apple (since a previous poster said they weren't able to help). We don't have an Apple store in my small town.

Anybody have any other ideas?

Try this first - Reset the iPad by holding down on the Sleep and Home buttons at the same time for about 10-15 seconds until the Apple Logo appears - ignore the red slider - let go of the buttons. (This is equivalent to rebooting your computer.)

Or this - Delete the account in Mail and then set it up again. Settings->Mail, Contacts, Calendars -> Accounts Tap on the Account, then on the red button that says Remove Account.

 Cheers, Tom 😉
