What's wrong with my iPad - out of the box?

I happily received my new iPad. But unlike what I'm supposed to see on my start-up screen, I only get a picture of a USB cord pointed at an iTunes icon. It only stays on a few seconds before the screen goes blank. Additionally, although I have it charging, via its charger, into a regular outlet, the battery doesn't seem to be charging. (When I have it plugged in, there's a "socket" icon inside the battery icon, but when it's not plugged in - and I had it plugged in overnight - the battery had only white space inside it. I am a longtime Mac user, but this is frustrating. What can / should I do?

iPad, iBook, iMac, Mac OS X (10.6)

That definitely doesn't sound correct. Try plugging it in to your Mac and see if it will recognize it. Try holding down the sleep button to make it actually turn off. Then power it back on again. You will get an Apple logo during a power on. If you don't get that, it may be dead.

All of that sounds like normal behavior. That "socket" is the charging indicator. The white space is the battery full indicator.

You are ok. That's what mine did. It is trying to tell you to connect your ipad using the furnished cable to a mac or pc running iTunes. (If you have not already done so, download and install iTunes on your computer first.)

After you do that, you will be prompted to register your iPad, only takes a minute, and then you are off an running.

I guess that is a benefit of standing in line to buy one. They registered mine for me at the AppleStore. I didn't pay too much attention to it.

I followed your instruction, but the problem is still there. The iTune can't recognize it. it still the USB point to iTune on my screen.

I just got my iPad today. and I don't know where to get the support and does anyone have the phone number that I can call Apple? Many thanks for the help.

I had the same problem on launch day, at an apple store. They set up my iPad, I left the store and sat around the mall playing with it while my wife shopped and then turned off the iPad. When I turned it back on in the parking lot, I had the same problem and the store had to reinitialize it. After 4 rounds of it having to be plugged into a computer after shutting it off, they gave me a brand new one right then and there.

I have the same problem. I had completely uninstalled the previous iTunes and Mobile device drivers. I then rebooted and installed the latest iTunes 9.1.1.12. When I plugged in the iPad nothing happened. I spent 2+ hrs on the phone with tech support and they had me do everything from putting the iPad in recovery mode, creating a new user profile in Windows, running iTunes diagnostics etc. Nothing worked. I also installed fresh iTunes on a clean WinXP box and nothing happened either. In total I tried 3 different computers and 8 USB ports. My iPhone syncs just fine with the same cable to that computer so its not the cable. I also made sure the iPad was fully charged using the 10w power adapter before I started. I finally through much trial and error have discovered how to make the PC detect the iPad. You have to power on the iPad, make sure the screen is on, and click around, and do various actions on the iPad. After about 30secs to 1min you'll here the familiar USB device detect beep. Give it a try! I've tested this on several times with different parameters (on 2 separate machines). It works every time!
