Won't Load Adobe PDFs File / File Size Greater Than 30mb
Oct 21, 2010
I've just encountered a limitation of the iPad (32gb) edition in that it is unable to load an Adobe Acrobat PDF file that is greater than 30mb in size.
Does anyone know if this limitation is present for all versions of the iPad or just a limitation of the 32gb model(s)?
In addition, is anyone aware of any other alternatives to viewing files of this size or greater without having to go through the process of re-authoring the document and breaking them down into smaller sizes.

UnRAID At Native Resolution - File Size Than A 720p File.
Feb 6, 2010
I rip all my BDs to my unRAID at native resolution (sans DRM). I just downloaded HandBrake to start ripping for the iPad (might do some iPhone too). Since HandBrake doesn't have a preset for the iPad what's the best guess on the resolutions/settings for the iPod? It seems to me that 1024x574 (1024x434 for 2.35) would be the best resolution since there would be no scaling and it would be a smaller file size than a 720p file.

Unable To Open File / File Size Limited For PDF Documents
Sep 23, 2010
It seems that the iPad has a limit of 30MB for displaying PDF files. This is rather small. Did Apple set this limit, or is there a technical reason for doing so.

Max File Size On An IPad?
Aug 3, 2011
I am copying some converted DVD films as .MP4s to my iPad 2 and would like to know what is the maximum file size that iOS allows on the iPad.
So far I have not tried, using iTunes on a Win-7 computer, any file larger than 2GB.
Is there a 2GB limit or some other maximum file size with iOS?

Won't Sync Video / File Size Is 4gb
Oct 21, 2010
I've converted some rather large .mkv files to .mp4 video but can't get them to load on my iPad. I can play them in iTunes just fine but they won't sync over. We're talking over 4GB sized files here. Do I need to downsize them for the iPad?

Increased File Size And Still Only 16GB?

Ridiculous that 32GB is not the minimum with how cheap storage is now. I mean 16GB is barely enough now for the standard iPad, let alone the increase in file sizes retina will introduce.

Won't Shrink Photo File Size / When Emailing

When you email photos from iPhone or Mac, the photo is automatically downsized to a filesize good for emailing. Not so true in iPad.
I just emailed 3 photos from iPad, and the email was 3.1 MB.
How can I send photos in a smaller size?

Reduce Size Of Mp4 File Before Moving To IPad?
Apr 3, 2012
I am new to the iPad and file transferring/converting so this might be a ridiculous or unclear question, but here it goes. I have a 4.7gb .mp4 movie that I am trying to place on a sd card so it doesn't take up the space on my iPad. However, when I try and transfer the file to the SD card it says its too big for the volume's format (FAT32) So I realize now that a file can't be larger than 4gb on a FAT32 formatted card. Does anyone know how I could reduce the size of this file to under 4gb without losing quality? Is this even possible, or is my only option to place it directly on the iPad and lose the space?
I ask because I will be living somewhere that doesn't allow me access to a computer or iTunes or anything so additional memory is great for me when I want to be watching movies in the bush.

The Real Cost Of 4G LTE - File Size Data?
Mar 9, 2012
A lot of people, including myself, had a hard time deciding whether to preorder a WiFi only iPad or a 4G iPad. In the end I felt that the 4G was not right for me because I mainly use the iPad at home and can tether it to my unlimited data phone if the need arises. Here is some data from the article about file sizes:
AT&T File-Size Estimates
 1 App/Game (non-Retina): 4MB
 1 App/Game (Retina): 8MB
1 hour of YouTube streaming: 120MB
1 hour of Netflix streaming: 306MB
They also mention that pictures and apps are much larger because of the HD screen. This could make using the 4G iPad a lot more costly than you expected.

IPad 2 :: IWork Doubles File Size
Jan 16, 2012
I have come across an odd problem whilst setting up my new iPad2 - I absolutely cannot find any mention of it on the internet which in turn makes it hard to believe it is in any way a common problem. Surely others would have noticed?
The problem is that any file I create in Pages, Numbers or Keynotes at least doubles in size when I sync to my iPad and open it in iWork. Example: 20kb file in Pages on my Macbook. If I either uploaded via iCloud or sync'd with Dropbox arrives on my iPad (dropbox reports it as correct size, no info on Pages menu).
As soon as the file is on the iPad (not even opened it at this point although it makes no difference if I do), it syncs with iCoud. At this point it turns into a 300kb file. If I download the file, it is now permanently bigger. The only way to reduce it back to normal is cut and paste into a new document and save it.
However as soon as you load it back to iCloud the problem comes back. If the file is created on the iPad Pages, then it is immediately 300kb even if you only write 1 character.
My guess is that a huge amount of meta-data is contained in the iPad version of Pages, which is then kept with the file for future syncing. This seems unacceptable and will hugely impact my storage requirements.
But I can't believe no-one has noticed this since iCloud was released which make me doubt my own set-up. Just create and save a file on your Mac and iCloud / Dropbox etc to your iPad. Once the file is in your Pages/Numbers/Keynote, let it sync and then check the file in on your URL... iWork to see it's size.

Video Conversion - Right File Format Without Growing In Size
Aug 21, 2010
Can anyone recommend a good guide for converting videos for use on the iPad?I've seen a couple on youtube, but most are geared for HD/DVD sized/quality videos. I've got a bunch of smaller .avi's that I've shot that balloon up in size if I follow any of the guides I've seen online (making a 512x384 video into 1280xwhatever monstrosity). I just need to convert those videos into the right file format without growing in size any. I tried doing it with MPEG Streamclip but a 170mb avi turned into a 200mb mp4 in the process.

Movies Rental - File Size Is To Large To Download
Dec 10, 2010
I was on vacation and tried to buy a movie in itunes and it only had a rental option. When I got home I checked on my iMac and it has able to be purchased. Is this just because of file size is to large to download to an iPad?
