I've been researching this problem ALL of Saturday, without any joy.
On Thursday, I purchased a brand-new iPad. After one day of adding apps, it suddenly stopped backing up. It had been slow, but that was to be expected with new data being added. I tracked down an issue with RSS feeds/Newspaper apps, which seemed to add HOURS to the backup. Delete these (NYT, BBC News, HuffPo) if possible.
The research said that the problems were many:
Use of older USB cable when syncing
SOLUTION: Use the one which came with the iPad
Two problematic .dlls stored (or not) in System 32 folder (XP Pro)
SOLUTION: Locate and replace these .dlls
Bad USB ports
SOLUTION: Switch cable around
Anti-Virus prog conflict
SOLUTION: Disable AV for a moment whilst backing up
(I even downloaded and installed "Backoff", a programme which allows you to choose whether you backup or not. Obviously, I also ticked the X on iTunes to stop it from syncing, but this defeats the problem -- eventually, I will have to backup my data)
I have tried <<all>> of these solutions without being able to backup my brand-new iPad. So what did I do: I got a replacement at the Apple Store where I had bought it just two days ago.
I came home, synced and backed up without problem, BUT when I went to add my <<first>> app the backup stalled all over again.
To test to see if it was my computer or not, I un/re-installed iTunes and Quicktime from scratch. Then I synced my Touch WITHOUT ANY PROBLEM in backing up.
I do not know what is happening. I am not a n00b. I know my way around a computer. I am at a complete loss to know how this is happening with an Apple product, which right now, is as worthless as a Windoze computer.
And if you're reading this, Apple, shame on you.
Your customers are having problems and your form replies and lack of iTunes support are a scandal.

My Ipad takes at least 15 minutes to back up and sync everytime I plug it into the computer and I only have about 5 gigs on it. Is there a solution to this, 90% of the time is spent on back up, can I turn that off?
View 2 RepliesI'm having great fun trying to get my iPhone, my iPad and my pc to play nicely. The problem seems to occur just with recurring appointments which cross the daylight saving time boundary, with the iPhone and the iPad treating the appointments differently.
The basic problem seems to be that if I set an appointment up on the pc, when I sync it to the iPad it gets shifted by one hour backwards (i.e. a 2.30 appointment becomes 1.30) in both Outlook and the iPad. It doesn't seem to make any difference whether I have Time Zone Support checked or unchecked. Sync the same appointment with the iPhone and it displays at the correct time. But it only seems to be recurring appointments which are affected and only those where they start now and run on after the change to GMT in late October. The iPhone, by contrast, shows the right time even when the ipad has messed up Outlook. Both devices are set to London time zone both in the general setting and the calendar setting. Outlook is set to GMT, adjusting for daylight saving time. It's driving me mad, just can't seem to fix it.
The Time Zone Support feature is very unintuitive. I want my device set up so that if I put in an appointment at 1pm it stays at 1pm even when I change time zones. I can't for the life of me see why Apple thinks that I would want to put an appointment I will attend in time zone B in at the wrong time when I make the appointment whilst in time zone A and hope that it turns up at the right time when I arrive at my destination - why would that ever be sensible?! It may be OK in the States (if you regularly cross time zones by 1hr) but it makes no sense at all in Europe.

HD on iTunes. It downloaded two different versions, SD and HD. Now I just want to have the SD version on my iPad, so I choose all videos, right click - version - SD. So far so good, but when I sync my iPad, iTunes syncs the HD version automatically
Does anyone have an idea or another thread where I can find something?
If I cancel the backup at the start of sync it takes about 2 mins. I've tried to get a backup of the iPad 3G 64GB and so far its taken 2 days. 12 hours each day and still It says its only about 10% though it.WHY is the backup taking so long? Previously when it did the backup it synced in about 5 mins. If I cancel the backup for any reason the next time it takes 24 hours at least to backup. Will the next iTunes and iOS4.2 fix the SLOW backups? If not then give me a good reason to update.I had to run the hack to disable backups at sync so it syncs in about 2-3 mins even when adding videos and bigger apps.

This is not really a new topic. Many people reported the same problem. But I have searched and searched through the forum and I do not think I have an answer.
I have a total of about 30G of contents to sync to the iPad including music, videos and photos. One would think only the changed files should be copied, but it seems like all the files are being copied over every time a sync is performed.
I am suspecting this because I do two sync's consecutively, without even touching the iPad no definitely no changes were made, the same amount of time is required to complete the sync.
Anyone has a solution yet? This is pretty annoying
It usually takes at least 2 sync sessions to get iCal on my iMac and iCal on my iPad to sync. It doesn't seem to make a difference if the new data is on the iMac or if it is on the iPad.
How can I get them to sync correctly the first time?

this must be a BUG! it's now been taking more than 10 hours to sync Ipad...it takes so long in backing up iPad.
i've already spoken w/ Technical support and has cleared the iPad before and resync.
it's still taking a long time... has anyone else experience this?
this definately must be a bug as it just can't take that long for a Fast computer that I have bougth recently from Dell (intel quad processor) to run backup for 64GB ipad for this long a time.
i hope apple can let me know what's happening and they need to fix their OS.

Anyone else notice ipad takes much longer to sync than the iphone? Maybe it's just my set up but both my ipad2 and ipad3 take far longer to sync than my iphone4. its always been like this too way before the new ipad came out.
my iphone is full to capacity and it still sync's very quick, like about a minute or less but both ipads can take up to 4 almost 5 minutes to finish. one of the hold ups i noticed with ipad is when it gets to the photos portion of the sync, that takes up about 80% of the time..so much longer i had to delete all of my photo folders except for a few..down to about 600 photos not including camera roll.
I've heard a lot of comments that the ipad takes a long time to charge on old computers. I was wondering if my eMac 1.25 ghz would be able to sync with the ipad. Not too bothered about charging since I'll just use the wall charger but I am bothered about getting my stuff onto the device.

View 4 RepliesSo far I've got about 4 gig of data on my iPad. The backup takes more than 2 hours to do. I hate doing it, because it takes too long. I understand, it takes that long to transfer 4 gigs to my hard drive.BUT-- Isn't it possible to do a Sync without doing a Backup?Do I have to do the backup every time?I've looked and looked. I see now way to avoid this.Maybe you've found the answer? Information:Windows, iPod, iPad Windows XP
View 6 RepliesHi, ok maybe a stupid question, but here goes. I never use my computer anymore. I do fine with my iPad and my iTouch. Not only that but I don't even want to use my computer! It's slow, etc. Anyway I bought a subscription to Mobile Me thinking I could use that as a backup alternate to syncing on my computer but now I find that Mobile Me doesn' really act like a backup, won't store some things like Pages documents unless I email them to myself, etc.
So my question is , what alternative, if any, is there to my old, clunky computer with iTunes on it can I use as a type of cloud or other backup location for my iPad, or any hardware available? I hate using my computer anymore. Thanks
I'm on my second unit now. I have about 15 gigs of data on mine. I started the backup last night at 9:30 PM, it's now 5:15 AM and the backup is less than 50% complete. I'll try it on a different machine tonight (this one is Vista Ultimate 64-bit), but I had the same problem with my original iPad on three different boxes (two PC, one Mac). I've got about 2.5 gigs of music, 9 gigs of comic books in ComicZeal, and 3 gigs in Apps (mostly PDFs for PDFReader HD).
View 1 RepliesI have had the iPad for a few months now. Today I read that ios 4.2 was out, so attempted to connect it to my Mac for the first time to carry out the upgrade (until now I've been content to download Apps through the Apps store and all has been fine)Anyway to cut a long story short after connecting to iTunes the Apps have transferred over to my library fine, but on attempting the upgrade it just sits at Backing up.... for hours with the status bar about 5% complete and never moving.any ideas welcome
View 1 RepliesDid all kinds of searches here; no joy!
Where, in Explorer do I find the iPad sync backups?
I would like to delete a few.
I'm not sure if the sync is slow or if the backup is slow. Ipad says "Sync in Progress", but Itunes says "Backing up iPad.
Apps on the iPad include a free calculator, Amazon.com's Kindle for Iphone/iPad, Barnes and Noble ereader for Iphone, Ibooks ap, and the aps that came preloaded with the iPad.
SYNC appeared to take only a few seconds, but BACKUP has been going for three hours, and the backup status bar at the top of iTunes is creeping along. Right now it indicates the backup is about 1/3 complete.
Should sync/backup take this long for the iPad? If not, what can be done to correct it?
As a iPad owner, to understand the ins & outs of backup & sync, I created a diagram, using a fixed-width font, with Textedit. It can't be posted here of course, it gets messed up without a fixed-width font. Hopefully I've attached a screen-capture png of most of it. I'd be very glad to hear of any errors & omissions!
View 1 RepliesWhat's the difference between syncing and restore from backup? i upgraded to iOS5 but i want to restore all the apps(games) and their respective settings, but when i click on 'Restore from Backup' iTunes says that it will only restore "contacts, calendars and notes", it doesn't say anything about restoring apps and their settings. And when i click on 'Sync Apps' iTunes says that it will delete all apps and stuff from the iPad 2 and i don't know if syncing restores all the apps with their respective settings.

My question is should I sync it to my iPhone backup so it loads with all my iPhone stuff and then take of any stuff I don't want on it. Or from scratch and select stuff for it, by doing that it won't mess up my iPhone apps will it ? Will iTunes control two different selections of apps for the different devices. I have never had two devices on iTunes before.
