Multitasking - Software Update
Jul 7, 2010I am considering getting an iPad. Is multitasking available on it yet? If not does anyone know when? I'm assuming it would be via software update. Information: iBookMac OS X (10.4.7)

View 5 Repliesseen so many reporting low RAM, I did a little test my self. I open four sites: engadget, macrumors, Gizmodo, and yahoo. Switching between these pages caused the page to be reloaded, very annoying. I ran pad Info, and it showed only 10MB of RAM free.so much hype on the powerful A4 but low in RAM It is like put a powerful truck engine into a Corola and can carry only 5 people.Others said that why would we care about RAM as long as ipad runs smooth? Well, it is not smooth. reloading page very time you switch tab/page is very annoying. what about the coming OS 4 with multitask? with this low RAM, how many app can run concurrently before they crash?
View 24 RepliesHave you seen the bezel on this thing?! It's huge! I know you don't want to accidentally input a command when your thumb is holding it, but come on.No MultitaskingThis is a backbreaker. If this is supposed to be a replacement for netbooks, how can it possibly not have multitasking? Are you saying I can't listen to Pandora while writing a document? I can't have my Twitter app open at the same time as my browser? I can't have AIM open at the same time as my email? Are you kidding me? This alone guarantees that I will not buy this product.
View 7 RepliesI had been looking forward to multitasking on iPad but have now started to wonder exactly why I might need this. On iPhone I can see advantage of returning to an app I was using when receiving phone call(if anyone ever called me...) or text, but on iPad most apps I might need to switch between save whatever when exiting.

I have my professor's tablet handwritten notes in PDF form that he posts from each lecture on the iPad. I am using my Macbook for a Combustion Chemical Equilibrium Calculator that was created by a professor at Colorado State. I've come to notice that I have found purpose for both of these devices in my life. I know several people have been creating pointless threads asking how everyone uses their iPad and I have read every word but I don't think users really understand just how useful technology is until you can organize each device's niche in your lifestyle.
How are you implementing the iPad into your digital lifestyle while maintaining use for your other toys?
I am thinking about getting an iPad for the times I am on the move. I would like to know if you can use Pages or another word processor and have Safari going at the same time. For my work I need to use the internet as well as Pages, is it possible on the iPad?

I just bought a new iPad and was told that a new os is supposed to come out now that allows multitasking and other neat improvements...anybody got the info on this ?
Information:
Dell
Windows XP
works good
I bought a Palm Pixi+ on the weekend, I quite like it, but one of the things that really stands out to me (in how 'Appley' it is) is WebOS' Multitasking.I hadn't seen much of it in the past, but in use, it's very, very powerful and sleek. What palm has done is extended the touchpanel to about a 10mm below the bottom edge of the screen. This is used for navigational gestures within 'Cards' (apps) and if you swipe up from the gesture bar, you are shown the open Cards.Like so:
To switch between apps, you can slide left or right, to close apps, you just swipe up from the card to the top of the screen. The notification system is MUCH nicer than iOS too, but unless hp can improve their SDK (apps don't have enough access to sensors) and get more quality developers for the App Catalog), I doubt any tablet with WebOS would 'kill' the iPad.
I think the new iOS4 multitasking is great. I can now have iPod play music while I do something else. But how do I turn it off? If I press the power button to put the iPad to sleep, the music keeps going. If I pause the music and put it to sleep, when I turn iPod back on it picks up where I left off. Is that just the way it works? Or am I missing something?
View 7 RepliesNot sure if it's just me, but I can't seem to get my iPad to play music while I'm doing something else, if you hit the home or Power button, music shuts down. Have I missed a setting? Is it just me? I wanted to listen to some music and surf on my glorious new iPad, but that's a no go. Apple can't expect you to sit there with the screen on just to listen to music, talk about a battery killer.
View 10 RepliesDid I read that correctly? iOS4 should start coming out by the end of June and bring multitasking to the iPad, AND folders? If true, that will be more good news for me today.

In thinking about this - with several of the APIs, OS 4.0 will get some elements of multitasking. And some of them are going to be very useful.
But his comment about that a user shouldn't ever see a task manager is rhetoric. Why? Because to open/close programs, on OS 4.0 you still have to double tap the home screen which brings up running apps and then hold down the icon to get the red x and then remove it from the multitask "dock"
All Apple has done is made a graphical version of a task manager. So instead of seeing the text of what program is running (and perhaps resources) - it's an icon.
And speaking of - Switching between apps already running is still the same number steps (one more click actually)as going in and out of a program, no? You're in one app - you double click the home button (instead of just clicking once) and then click the program to go back into.
GRANTED - you do get the benefit of background task completion/freeze states, etc.
But I am/was really hoping given the real estate available on the iPad that you'd actually be able to have more than one application UP at a time - side by side, or something.
Don't get me wrong - and I understand this is multitasking 1.0 for these devices. And to have at least this functionality will be great and very useful.
But - like my subject line says - is this true or faux multitasking for your needs/wants...?
Ok no this is no rumor just an idea collection I'm starting. Submit any ideas you think would make it into any future iPad releases.
Ok so here is my idea:
Bigger and better. I would like to have a 13" touchpad at my disposal. I just find that it is too small for my kind of multitasking. it would be the ultimate tool. but for this i would prefer to have a mac OS rather than the small iOS systems. i wanna macbook on a touchscreen in simple terms. It would in fact be possible. it may not be as portable, but it would be great just the same.
Is that correct?
I can understand why they did it like that...but are all app makers really going to go back and recode their apps for this? We are talking about 150,000+ apps...some of them may not even work on apps anymore.
I wonder how many apps will work with multitasking on day one?
I understand an OS upgrade for iPAD will be available in several months. What changes will the produce in ordinary iPAD use? I understand that multitasking will now be possible, but will there be any other apparent changes in how things work?
View 4 RepliesI think many guys hope hacking firmware releases.....Why? Just free applications? Could you explain what's change? Can I do multitasking with my Ipad? If I try hacking...
View 3 RepliesMultitasking is a key which gives you the facility to disable a currently running program on a single click.I really love this feature.Since i am going to buy an iPad 3, so just want to know whether iPad 3 contains this key or not?
View 9 RepliesAre those multitasking gestures available on the iPad2, or has not been released yet?
