Maps Zoom Level Limited - Satellite View Is Even Worse And Does Not Track The Street Map Zoom Level At All

May 22, 2012

Recently the Maps app on both my iPads started limiting my abilty to zoom in far enough to be able to read street names. This is a new thing, it was working fine a couple of weeks ago, but recently the maps started refusing to zoom past arbitrary and contstantly changing limits. On the iPad 2, the street names are fairly readable (indoors, with soft lighting), but on the new iPad 3 you need a pocket microsope and a sun shade to read them. Literally.

The satellite view is even worse and does not track the street map zoom level at all. You can at least see secondary roads on the standard view, but you can't see streets smaller than an 8-lane expressways on the zoom level you can get with the sat layer turned on. When I compare it to Google Earth, the sat view available on Maps looks to be at an eye level of about 35000 feet. I used to use Maps to find specific buildings in Seoul, now I can only find things larger than the Olympic soccer stadium. (Visible as a 3mm oval)

This limit is not imposed on the Google Maps web site accessed via Safari, nor in Google Earth for Ipad, nor on the Android Google Maps apps on my Android pad or phones. It only happens on the Apple Maps app, and only in Korea as far as I can tell. It zooms fine in Washington D.C., Tokyo, Astana, Teheran, and Moscow.

It makes the Maps app completely useless on a Retina display. It's real pretty but you can't read it. I haven't been able to find mention new of this new "feature" anywhere else, has anyone here experienced this problem?

Info:
iPad, iOS 5.1.1

View Sites In Safari At 100% Zoom Level?

Apr 22, 2012

Is there a way to prevent Safari from zooming in on websites to fit the screen when you load them? I could see why this was necessary on the older iPads, but now that the retina display is even better than the resolution of most laptops and desktops, I think it's a bit odd to have everything on the iPad still zoom in and try to display everything larger than it needs to be be default. Is there some type of bookmarklet or some browser out there that will display websites at exactly a 1 to 1 pixel ratio, as if it were being viewed on a desktop with a 2048x1536 display?

Maps App Limiting Abilty To Zoom?

May 22, 2012

Recently the Maps app on both my iPads started limiting my abilty to zoom in far enough to be able to read street names in South Korea. Try zooming in on Seoul in Maps with the satellite layer enabled to see what I am describing.

Maximum Zoom View Stuck On Display?

Jan 29, 2011

My children got onto my iPad and started to navigate a game with both of their hands during a zoom function. Now my device remains on the maximum zoom view, even after leaving the game, preventing me from viewing and thus operating/manipulating the device. I've already restored the device, granted after the zooming got stuck, and it remains in the maximum zoom view.

Brightness Level And Battery Life?

Jun 10, 2010

What do you keep your brightness at? I try to leave it at 50% for battery life, but when it's bright out I have to max it out. And when it's dark i have to take it all the way down. The ambient light sensor in this thing sucks! (or is it just me?)For those of you who keep it bright. Do you notice a decrease in battery life?

Software Level - File Transfer

Oct 7, 2010

I don't have an Ipad yet, but I'm planning to buy one soon. I need to understand how much it really costs, before making a hole in my bank account though. How much did you guys spend on average to get your Ipad up to the software level required for a day to day use ?I'm a Linux user, with MS windows here and there, where most what I have comes from free software. The type of tools I'm looking at are a file manager, a word/excel processor like open office (or at least a viewer, some advanced text editors such as PSpad, notepad++, a radio, picture viewer, mpeg/avi viewer like vlc, file transfer, telnet, ssh, software to connect to a windows PC etc.. plus all the stuff that come necessary when you use a beast like the ipad (and which I have no idea about)

New IPad 2 Minimum Brightness Level?

Mar 16, 2012

Just wondering to anyone who has the new iPad - Could you please compare the minimum brightness level to the iPad 1 or 2? I'm hoping you can turn it down a bit more than the iPad 2 (and 1) screen. I find it way too bright at night when I'm reading something with a white background.I know some apps have their own extra brightness control and I personally use a jailbreak fix to make the colours darker to extend the brightness range. But it would be great if it would do it on its own now Especially as there probably won't be a jailbreak for a while.
