Long Backup During Sync Ruining
Jun 15, 2010
I have tried all solutions recommended by my esteemed fellow Apple support forum members and have somewhat mitigated the length it takes to sync my iPad but why should I have to delete apps etc in order to successfully sync???Waiting and waiting is killing me (yeah I know...impatient) but this is crazy... One sync took over an hour to get just half way before I quit...

Sync Takes Long Time To Take Backup
Jul 10, 2010
My Ipad takes at least 15 minutes to back up and sync everytime I plug it into the computer and I only have about 5 gigs on it. Is there a solution to this, 90% of the time is spent on back up, can I turn that off?

Long Backup Times Resolved
Jul 15, 2010
When I first bought my iPad on opening day, I brought it home and hooked it up to my computer to let it sync. I waited for over 2 hours while it was in backup mode, which at the time was barely started... so I canceled the backup and let it sync. I had no apps on it, not data entered it was a fresh device.Over the time since then I just canceled backup, I once let it sit for more than 18 hours and it was about 75% done. I searched to find help, my ipod touch backs up pretty quickly. I was searching today trying to fix this problem so I could update the firmware without losing important data. One of the posters said to another to check to see if they had enough hard drive space. I know one of my drives was getting a little low, so I transferred the download folder to another drive that had more space. Now the drive has more than enough space.I hooked up my ipad expecting it to choke, its been less than 30 min and its past half way done, I expect it to take a little longer due to all the data I have on it. I thought I'd post my findings for those who are still having the long backup problem. I tried software to completely skip backup but that doesn't help if something happens to the ipad. It looks like I am on my way to completing my first backup with this thing.

How Long Does "Restore From Backup" Take
May 26, 2011
Not sure what happened to my iPad today, but it popped up the "connect to iTunes" screen and wouldn't budge from that.(Then a tornado went through, the power went out and only recently has it been back on.)So I connect to iTunes, and it says it needs to be restored, it downloads and reinstalls firmware, software and who knows what-all, then asks if I want to restore from my last (embarrassingly long ago) back up. I said yes, and it has been cranking away for what seems like forever. What concerns me is that the estimated time remaining keeps going up. It said 22 minutes when I started typing this, and I just checked and not it says 25.

Takes Long Time For Sync
Nov 15, 2010
If I cancel the backup at the start of sync it takes about 2 mins. I've tried to get a backup of the iPad 3G 64GB and so far its taken 2 days. 12 hours each day and still It says its only about 10% though it.WHY is the backup taking so long? Previously when it did the backup it synced in about 5 mins. If I cancel the backup for any reason the next time it takes 24 hours at least to backup. Will the next iTunes and iOS4.2 fix the SLOW backups? If not then give me a good reason to update.I had to run the hack to disable backups at sync so it syncs in about 2-3 mins even when adding videos and bigger apps.

Long Sync Causing The Damaging ?
Oct 6, 2010
I've had troubles syncing my iPad to my XP comp since the beginning, but lately he seems to have taken the tendency to take hours to preform the first step of the sync. There are anywhere between 3 and 6 steps when I sync up (depending on what I've added/changed), but always the first one is "Backing up". This is the one that can easily take over an hour to complete, the other ones usually last minutes if not seconds (unless I add a good couple hundred songs/pictures, which I don't really do anymore).
If my computer ups and dies it's not going to be a big deal (it was given to me, I never even payed anything for it). But all in all I've invested over 900$ into my Pad, and if there's any chance that this is damaging it I'd like to know. If it means going without any new apps or songs until I get my next computer, I can live with that.

Sync Takes Very Long Time
May 7, 2010
This is not really a new topic. Many people reported the same problem. But I have searched and searched through the forum and I do not think I have an answer.
I have a total of about 30G of contents to sync to the iPad including music, videos and photos. One would think only the changed files should be copied, but it seems like all the files are being copied over every time a sync is performed.
I am suspecting this because I do two sync's consecutively, without even touching the iPad no definitely no changes were made, the same amount of time is required to complete the sync.
Anyone has a solution yet? This is pretty annoying

Takes A Long Time To Charge / Sync On Old Computers
May 21, 2010
I've heard a lot of comments that the ipad takes a long time to charge on old computers. I was wondering if my eMac 1.25 ghz would be able to sync with the ipad. Not too bothered about charging since I'll just use the wall charger but I am bothered about getting my stuff onto the device.

PDF Font Support - PDFs Font Without Ruining The Formatting
Jun 24, 2010
've quickly learned the iPad lacks font support except for a few specific fonts for PDFs. This is causing some problems as the PDFs for my current classes simply aren't readable on it. I doubt Apple is suddenly going to add extra font support, so I'm asking has anyone found a way to successfully convert a PDFs font without ruining the formatting? These are technical documents so the formatting is important for the charts/graphs involved. I'd love any advice!

How To Sync Without Doing A Backup?
Jul 27, 2010
So far I've got about 4 gig of data on my iPad. The backup takes more than 2 hours to do. I hate doing it, because it takes too long. I understand, it takes that long to transfer 4 gigs to my hard drive.BUT-- Isn't it possible to do a Sync without doing a Backup?Do I have to do the backup every time?I've looked and looked. I see now way to avoid this.Maybe you've found the answer? Information:Windows, iPod, iPad Windows XP

Non-sync Backup
Jun 5, 2010
Hi, ok maybe a stupid question, but here goes. I never use my computer anymore. I do fine with my iPad and my iTouch. Not only that but I don't even want to use my computer! It's slow, etc. Anyway I bought a subscription to Mobile Me thinking I could use that as a backup alternate to syncing on my computer but now I find that Mobile Me doesn' really act like a backup, won't store some things like Pages documents unless I email them to myself, etc.
So my question is , what alternative, if any, is there to my old, clunky computer with iTunes on it can I use as a type of cloud or other backup location for my iPad, or any hardware available? I hate using my computer anymore. Thanks

Sync Backup Too Slow
Apr 15, 2010
I'm on my second unit now. I have about 15 gigs of data on mine. I started the backup last night at 9:30 PM, it's now 5:15 AM and the backup is less than 50% complete. I'll try it on a different machine tonight (this one is Vista Ultimate 64-bit), but I had the same problem with my original iPad on three different boxes (two PC, one Mac). I've got about 2.5 gigs of music, 9 gigs of comic books in ComicZeal, and 3 gigs in Apps (mostly PDFs for PDFReader HD).

How To Make And Do Sync/backup?
Nov 28, 2010
I have had the iPad for a few months now. Today I read that ios 4.2 was out, so attempted to connect it to my Mac for the first time to carry out the upgrade (until now I've been content to download Apps through the Apps store and all has been fine)Anyway to cut a long story short after connecting to iTunes the Apps have transferred over to my library fine, but on attempting the upgrade it just sits at Backing up.... for hours with the status bar about 5% complete and never moving.any ideas welcome
