Initial Impressions After Reviews?

Mar 31, 2010

1) Disappointed that you can't print from the iPad directly.2) Very surprised by the ability to put files on your desktop. In Ihnatko's written review he mentions that you can either save items to your desktop from an app, an email, or from a "cloud" based service (mobile me's idisk I hope). Then when you click on the file, he says there's a little pop up with asks which app you would like to open the file with. Did I miss this or is this huge news? Now the thought of saving photos to the desktop and opening them up with a Lightroom-lite app (if Adobe ever makes it) is extremely exciting.3) The ability to communicate between iPhone and iPad over wireless or bluetooth is very encouraging. Hopefully, this will allow transfer of downloaded music in the future so that if I download a song/video on my iPad and I want to take it with me on an even more portable device (my iPhone) I can transfer it wirelessly without the need for a computer.4) Pleasantly surprised you can fit more than 4 icons in the dock.5) Still blown away by the speed of the device.Overall, I'm pleasantly surprised by the reviews so far (with Ihnatko's being the best by far). The iPad is more of a notebook like device than I thought it was going to be and any shortcomings can be overcome with future software updates or apps.

Cannot Make Initial Sync With PC?

Jun 6, 2010

I have seen a number of other posts regarding people having issues with syncing, but everyone has made it further than I have as far as I have read. When I initially plugged my Ipad into my PC out of the box it loaded the OS on and then started to sync, after a moment I got an error stating the my ipad had timed out, then three other errors saying that it could not write to the device. It shows my ipad as a device but with a 4 gig capacity. I did a restory and tried to sync with a different USB port as suggested in a number of other posts. Gets a bit further this time, recognizes a 29.04gb capcity, but still says it times out and the other errors as well. The Ipad operates ok (aside from not seeing the whole drive), but when i try to sync any apps or files i get other errors stating that the "required disk cannot be found" and "an error occured while writing to the device".

I have a 32gb Ipad wi-fi and windows 7 64bit OS. I just downloaded Itunes today so my version is current.

Information:
Ipad 32g
iPhone OS 3.1.3

Initial Sync And Size Of OS Update?

Apr 24, 2010

Couple of questions...

1) I will be out of state at the 3G launch and will most likely buy the ipad there so I don't get left in the cold and have them out of stock when I get home. If I want all the apps I've purchased on my ipad, does it HAVE to be done from my desktop computer where my itunes resides or will my itunes account know what I have and load it up accordingly?

2) I know I'm reaching with this one, but can anyone fathom a guess at how big the update for the new OS will be? How much space do they take up normally? I was planning on just getting the 16GB since I don't keep music or movies and plan on just having this for apps and internet, but if the update will be huge, then perhaps I need to bump up to the next size.

Initial Setup To Any Computer With Itunes

Sep 13, 2010

I was recently gifted an IPAD 3G 64GB!!! and am very excited. However, I am an IPAD/Apple newbie and want to make sure I setup correctly I am a bit confused about the initial setup....I was told I need to connect the IPAD to a computer that has ITUNES on it? Can someone help me with this? - Can I do the initial setup on ANY computer with ITUNES or will I be bound to that computer for future use? The issue is that I do not have a working laptop right now, and am using a desktop that already has someone else's Itunes library on it

Initial MR Forum Reaction To The IPhone

Jan 27, 2010

The post announcing the original iPhone in 2007 had almost as many "negative" ratings as "positive," 494 to 434 (http://www.macrumors.com/2007/01/09/...es-the-iphone/). The fifth comment in the thread, typical of many others, was: "Wow, extremely disappointed that there's no MVNO. Talk about a letdown. "

Yup, the MR forums labeled the iPhone a failure for, among other reasons, its lack of an MVNO.

Here we go again with the iPad. People are saying it's not innovative because it looks like a big iPod touch. What did you expect an Apple tablet computer to look like other than an iPod touch that's larger? It doesn't have Flash. Beyond YouTube, which has terrific iPad support, is Flash really that important to your day-to-day life?

What major functionality can the iPad not do that you want it to do? Why are people so desperate to focus in on one small technology that it doesn't have to color the whole device a failure?

What this is is a device that does most of what a laptop does, including creating/editing documents, and even does many things a lot better than a laptop--except for it's so much smaller/lighter (1.5 lbs, 0.5 inches) than even crappy netbooks, and it has so much better battery life.

Can't Connect To Wi-fi During Initial Setup Of IPad2

Apr 27, 2012

My wife and I just purchased 2 new iPad 2's, one foe each of us. They came FedEx today, and I am trying to get past the setup screen. The unit recognizes my wireless internet, but when I enter the password for the connection, it just sits there thinking, and does nothing. I have tried this on both units, with the same results on both. I can't do anything else on this unit, because it is stuck on this screen, since it does not connect to the internet. And of coarse Apple does not give you any manuals to help with troubleshooting. Anybody else have this same problem and manage to get past it?

Initial Setup - Begin Sync Process

Jul 13, 2010

I am helping a friend set up an iPad. The Mail setup went without a hitch.
When Contact, Email accounts, Calendars are selected, and the Apply button is hit to begin the sync process, the Backing Up iPad announcement appears. Once this is completed, will his contacts, email accounts, calendars on his computer be synched to the iPad or will the information on his computer be replaced with what (nothing) is on the iPad?We're basically just looking for an explanation of what is actually going to happen.

Initial Setup Required Software Update Now Stuck?

Dec 27, 2011

I received my first iPad for Christmas. It was purchased at Target. Yesterday evening, I went to set it up for the first time and update with my last iPhone 4s backup (done that morning). iTunes indicated that the software on the new iPad was older so I would need to set it up as a new iPad first, then update software. I began the process at 8pm. It's now 12+ hours later and the bar on the iPad is at about 75%. iTunes appears to still be churning away and reads "restoring iPad firmware". I am not sure if it is stuck and I should disconnect (horrors?) or just let it continue. Very nervous.I've searched around on the older posts but am still unsure and need advice. This iPad is new but the first part of the process did appear to be moving over my music from iTunes. That's only about 3 GB. The nearest Apple Store is two hours away.

Initial Sync Of Apps Frozen During Setup Process

Jun 13, 2012

In the setup process, while syncing the apps, it has hung up on one particular app for about 14 hours -- the progress bar is showing a bit more than half done and it says "Loading". I can't delete the app, can't break out of the sync. When I go to the App Store, I get the message that the app is ""Installing". Initially I was doing this over a wifi connection, but I am now connected to iTunes on my PC, and the situation has not changed. In the meantime, the iPad is also indicating that there are four updates in the App Store (badge on the App Store icon). Now what? This is not an app I need, and I would be happy to nuke it. A number of other apps that are far more important to me are Waiting. I need to get this one to complete and for the sync to move on.

iPad, iOS 5.1.1
