3G Bars / In Landscape Less Bars

May 28, 2010That's because when I am close to my business Five means very rapid dnld speeds. When I am at home, about 6 miles from the single tower available, Five means half the dnld speeds measured at my shop. I have been attempting (with little success) to mount an extra antenna to improve the signal and repeater so I can replace the hardwire phone service in my home and have an option other then dialup. (Verizon does not offer DSL and Comcast says;)
The reason I now know these speeds is that there is a very good, free app: SPEEDTEST X HD for the iPad that runs a test and provides actual dnld speeds. I have a posting with photos over at ipadforums.net/ipad-general-discussions/3720-do-ts-3g-bars-actually.html if you want to see the actual data.
The problem, of course, is that knowing this is knowing you also cannot do anything about it....

Few Bars / No Network
May 11, 2010I live about 6 miles from a cell tower.AT&T is pretty secretive about exactly where they placed their towers; it is as if Verizon does not know where they are located?!only paying customers.
I can get all five bars about half the way up my driveway but 1-2-Nada bars at my house standing outside.
I knew in advance that reception may be sketchy, so I ordered the Wi-Ex zBoost YX510-PCS/CEL Dual Band Wireless Extender from solidsignal.com and to back that up, I got an extra directional antenna; Wilson Electronics 301155 Dual Band Panel Antenna.It's the later device that needs to be pointed toward the tower. I got up on my roof and made a pole that extended over the ridge pointing the antenna in a variety of directions.Going back inside, with the zBoost fired up, I get maybe 2..sometimes 3 bars. (the omni directional, stick antenna included with the zBoost package gets no bars.
I added another 100 feet of coax and moved the antenna to a more clear section, with the hope that cell signals, like rain, may fall in an open area versus close to the trees around the house to little effect.
My next move is another 500 feet of coax so I can move the antenna closer to the area with the green arrow. It should get me about half way. I did that rather than 1,000 feet because when I walk the iPad up the property line, I get a good signal about 500 feet from the house.
My concern is that the antenna and extender do not naturally capture better signal strength than the iPad itself, so using the iPad as a base signal seaker may be misleading. D'no?!
I'll keep adding to this post in case someone has a similar situation. My goal it to delete the Verizion landline at both my house and business with an iPhone.I'm a Mac loyalist.

May 15, 2010I got a 'Wi-Ex zBoost YX510-PCS/CEL Dual Band Wireless Extender' because I knew from using three different cellphone services, Verizon, Net10 and Tracfone, that I do not get many bars at my home. We're in the woods on the edge of a marsh on the eastern shore of Maryland. Without it the 'extender' I get 2-3 bars of 3G on the back porch, none in the house.
the extender is doing little to improve my results. Last night I ran 500' of RG6 and placed their optional directional antenna in the proper direction in clear zone. But this morning - I get nothing except AT&T "E" and a spinner next to it. The odd thing: it was dnld my local weather service (..about 1/2 dialup speed) ..but there were no bars? I gather AT&T had a 3G failure yesterday .. but when I got to town an hour after getting E .. I got 5bars of 3G. What is E?

AT&T's 3G Bars Signal Indication
May 22, 2010measure anything. I can imagine One - Two bars are a clear indicator of a weak signal, but what does Five bars actually mean? Is there such a thing as a weak/strong signal and a strong/strong signal?
I'm one of AT&T's 3% on the fringes of all cellular networks grasping for all information I can get to bend a signal to allow us to shed a land line.
5 Bars But No Service / The E Is Missing
May 15, 2010Yesterday afternoon I had 5 AT&T bars and an E for Edge service which was what I expected at my location (Northern Nevada). Internet, email, etc. all worked OK. Last night and continuing through today, I still have had five bars but a small circle where the E used to be and no internet service is working.

3G Signal Bars But No Network
Jul 17, 2010I have been using my iPad 3G 64GB for a while now, in various conditions (city, inside, outside, countryside etc) in Italy with "3".I also have an iPhone 3G, with the same provider.
I have noticed that the iPad 3G signal bars are not reliable: where the iPhone will show 1 to 3 bars, the iPad will show a strong 5 all the time, then drop loose the network altogether, and pick it up again. Given the outcomes of my performance tests, it looks like the iPad is pretty consistent with the iPhone 3G, as to connection speed in various signal strength conditions.
The problem is that the signal bars are simply incorrect (and the line is dropped more easily with the iPad rather than the iPhone).
I also have dropped WiFi links at home (I have a WiFi router provided by Fastweb, which is probably crap, but works ok with my MacBook and MacBook Pro).

Every other device I have connected to my home network seem to work flawlessly but my iPad doesn't. Full Bars But Can't Connect To Internet
Aug 18, 2010I couldn't get connection and get any bars now most of the time I have bars but it still won't connect. Safari times out and I get messages playing apps saying not connected to the Internet.
Sometimes if I lift the iPad in the air I can get the website to load.
I finally got bard by changing the router to channel 11. So got thar far, but doesn't make a difference if it still doesn't connect.
5 Bars, No Network / No Change In Location
May 15, 2010Just bought 3G 64MB on Wednesday.Worked great until Friday 5:30PM. Now I have 5 bars but no network.
Is this an ATT deficiency or is it the IPAD?

Slow Wifi / Even With The Full Bars
May 9, 2010Not sure if this is the same issue others have, since I show full bars in my home. But even with full bars I'm only getting 2.5Mbps on my iPad. Every other device (PC, Mac, ZuneHD, Netbook) gets 18-20MBps.
